Is there anything better than the Onkyo nr609 for the money?

And I currently have a pair of Gale floorstanding speakers, can i couple anything with that for a decent surround set-up?

    Cheers

    Dave

Other receivers of similar quality would include the Yamaha 671 and Denon 1912 (can be bought for under £300 now).
You really need the front 3 speakers to be the same make and model to get a good front soundstage. Not sure Gale do a centre so you may have an issue there. You could not get a centre and just get a pair of rear speaker and sub to make a 4.1 system. Or you could just get a full 5.1 system.
What would your total budget for speakers and amp be?

I just picked a Denon 2312 from Richer for £399. There's a few dotted about if you look on their website if you are interested

You're lucky, my local richer in Belfast told me this deal had ended, but they had some in stock......for £499!

I'm on the lookout for a new receiver for similar money, and I reckon if you can get the denon it's a good deal,(unfortunately not if you live in NI though!) I might get the Yamaha 671 it's £369 in most places. But March isn't too far away so maybe wait and see what new models turn up from the likes of Yamaha and .

My money would be on the Denon AVR-1912 available from £299 - £349 depending on where you buy (check whether delivery cost is included on the £299 offers!)

Have to agree, it would be the Yamaha RXV671 :) I have had mine for around 3 months having moved down from an Onkyo 875 due to size constraints I wrongly assumed I would be somewhat disappointed with the sound quality, how wrong could I be! the Yamaha sounds great & just gets better. I paid the original price of £499 & don't regret it for a second.

As a bonus there is a free iphone App available which lets you control the Amp. & stream music from your phone which is a nice touch. :)

Does this involve buying any extra equipment, or can you stream from a iphone straight out of the box?

Trying to decide between the 671 and the Onkyo 609. I'm drawn to the Yamaha but I think the Onkyo has more features.

Another satisfied Yamaha 671 owner here :hiya:

I heard it performs better with music than the Onkyo which swayed my decision.

I keep all of my music on my phone (samsung galaxy s) so one of my favourite features is the Android app.

You don't need any extra equipment - just make sure you're on the same wifi network as the receiver and launch the app - it basically works as the amp's remote control.

To stream music you just press the music button and it will play any music stored on the phone. Obviously the app isn't up to the standard of iTunes as a media player, so it helps if you've got some playlists set up before you launch the app.

Also means I don't have to connect using an analogue jack-to-phono cable - winner

I presume it works in the same way with the iPhone app

    No extra equipment required :)

I had the same dilema & almost went for the 609 despite several people advising the Yamaha was the better option, in the end I liked the look of the Yamaha better & after an extended listening session decided to go for it as it offered everything & more I personally needed. :)
