Probably been asked a thousand times but here goes, I'm interested in a projector, don't want to spend mega bucks, was thinking of the BenQ w1070+. I'm struggling with working out screen size, the projector will roughly be 16 feet away from the screen, can you give me some advice please. Even if you have suggestions for a different projector. Many thanks in advance

According to the Benq W1070+ calculator, with the lens 16 feet from the screen, you can get a 16:9 image that is between 147" and 192" diagonal, or between 10'9" and 13'11" wide. Even at those sizes, you will have a very bright image:

Thanks Gary, so the smallest screen from that distance is 10.9 wide? To have a smaller screen with the BenQ I would have to have the projector closer I guess? Are there any decent projectors for similar money that I could end up with a smaller screen or can you explain the formula for working out screen size as it baffles me.

Thanks again

Yes, the only way to go smaller is to move the pj closer.

If you follow the link I posted, it takes you to the Benq website and the throw calculator. Select home cinema pj, and the W1070+, then have a play with the sliders. That'll give you the distance to the screen, image size and how far the pj needs to be from the floor or ceiling.

I'm not sure what other pjs there are in that price range that have longer throws, unless you consider something like a Sony or JVC, and/or the second hand market. maybe an Epson would work, but you'd have to check. If @kbfern sees this he'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Sorry to bother you again Gary, if you get a chance could you work out what size screen for the BenQ from 12ft as for some reason I can't access the link due to needing adobe.

Thanks

No problem - it will be around 8ft 1 inches wide from 12 feet away:

Could you explain to me what happens to a 16:9 image projected on a 16:10 screen. I just bought a screen thinking it was a bargain but it's 16:10!!!

You will get black bars because the screen is 1.6:1 instead of 1.78:1. The bars will be at the top and bottom unless you zoom the image a little larger, but then the image will overspill on the sides/wall either side of the screen.

If you don't lower the screen so much, you may be able to just use the lower portion of the screen, but you may not know what that will be like until you get it. Can you cancel the order?
