belkin Speaker cable

For the small speakers in question, 18Guage will be the minimum you need. With larger speakers with a bigger current draw, 16 Guage is the minimum with 13 Guage or thicker the optimum for really large drivers. In my book you can never have enough copper!

Worth the slight extra!

EDIT:

In fact that is an amazing price considering anyone could buy two reels, double up and get 30.5m of 2.6 sq mm Belkin Cable, 8 banana plugs for the price of 43.5p per meter! Bargain!

Thats fantastic value, are the reels twin shotgun cable (+ and -) or single strand?

It's speaker cable, so it is + and -

Thanks - just checking as I've seen some cable on reels in singular form.... Seems to be a very good price, just trying to find out the diameter of the cable now....

Edit - Just found a conversion chart that says 16awg is 1.5mm2..... 18awg is 0.75mm2

Mr Incred, it take it i'll have to acquire more plugs but will it be 2 or 12 for the 5.1 speakers?
Sorry meant to say i've ordered two sets so will have 8.... whats that 2.6mm stuff you mentioned in teh bargin forum..any relevance to me?

You don't have to acquire more plugs at all. Although plugs can be used and soldered to cable for the optimum connection, the use of plugs s more for convenience sake if your moving about a lot, or trying different cables/bi-amping etc. Most if not all terminals on a speaker or amplifeir will take banana plugs or just plain bare wire. Your choice really.

I use these

more or less 50p each plus posting.

I like these because you can either enter the cable on the top or the side. Side entry allows them to be stacked if messing about with bi-amping/wiring at the amp end.

You won't need plugs for the ".1" subwoofer as that use a different connection method (phono to phono) as a subwoofer worth its salt will be an active (self powered) unit.

Just to let you know, they also do the cable in white, but is £3 per reel more if you think it's worth it.... ;)

HI thanks for that, yeah i've heard i few people saying the need to get a better subwoofer cable for the 102's so i figured it was different.... thsi is all kinda new as my last/first 5.1 home cinema setup was a panasonic sc-mp08 that i got on display from dixons for £70 and its served its purpose... but the speakers on it had fixed wiring (i think from memory) and its 2 main front speakers were super woofers so this is all new to me... i take it i dont need to worry about that doubling up then

I've just ordered all my cabling/plugs from Dell. Fingers crossed they don;t throw a hissy fit a few people taking advantage of a reasonable deal.

If you look at the BElden conversion tables:
http://www.belden.com/pdfs/TechInfo/Conversion Tables - Equiv of sq mm sq in and circ mils.pdf
you'll see that there isn't an equivalent metric wire thickness for 16 AWG. The nearest metric equivalent is 1.5 sq mm, but in true conversion, 16 AWG is 1.3 sq mm.
http://www.reuk.co.uk/AWG-to-Square-mm-Wire-Size-Converter.htm

16 AWG = 1.31 sq mm

Thanks - Would this 16awg cable be fine for high end lifestyle speakers such as the Kef 3005 etc, or would it be better to double up as you mentioned earlier to get 2.6 sqmm?

For "smaller" lifestyle speakers, 1.3 sq mm would probably be OK. But as I said previously, IMO you can never have enough copper!

Just something I've noticed, the banana plugs that come with the cable look very thin on the web site. Could they be the wrong size?

Dunno. It talks about "speaker pins" rather than (4mm) banana and they do look long and slender. But TBH, I wouldn't worry about it. The cable is the important thing, you can use bare wire or spend £2 for 4 bananas for each run if they are "thin".

Great Stuff Mr. I. I thought these were great value @ £2.10 a pair from Satcure, have just ordered 26 !!! These plugs are to me superior to Ixos 204s that cost £10 for 4 !!!! :smashin:

These part numbers do not show up on a standard CPC search. They only appear in the special catalogues (which you can download) and which I get in the post. I only spotted these cheapies as I was flicking through the offers this morning! 43p + VAT is terrific. Normally they are £1.12 each
http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/Cable,+W...IGNAL/PSG01681/displayProduct.jsp?sku=AV15229

Note the part number AV15229 and the part number of the special offer AV1522902

CPC do tend to use special suffixes for special pricing! THe suffix changes for each special offer, but I occasionally just stick an '02' (or whatever) on the end of partnumber to see if they have it on an undisclosed price! ;)

Aren't speaker pins posh terminations for those spring-loaded clip terminals?

Looking at them, yes, I think you're right.

Just to say that even with the delivery now chargeable, even two reels of this cable still works out at 86p per meter of 2.6 mm2 Belkin Pure AV cable. Still a lot less than the Van Damme Blue 2.5 mm2 at nearly £1.80 per meter! As I've said before "Copper is copper".

will these bannana plugs go into the back of an onkyo 605 as opposed to have to just tighten them down

This wires pretty good, although im not running high end equipment I noticed the difference in sound straight away when I re-wired all my creative 7.1 system. The sound was just more 'cleaner' if you know what I mean,

I used this 16G wire. I got 30m for around £12 delivered! That was from an Amazon Market place called Kikatec iirc.
