Hi Guys - sorry to jump in with a straightforward request but Im looking at getting my first Camcorder, However I really want to limit my budget as I dont want to end up buying one that gets used once a year....

    My Criteria are as follows

    no more than £500
Firewire or USB2 output as I'll be writing to DVD
    small (ish)
shake correction - if its worth it?
    Resonable zoom

... sorry if its a bit vague but I am new

    Thanks

    Simon

    Hi sisniper & welcome

A few pointers on choosing a camcorder.

If you want to create DVD's then it must have a firewire port. USB is just for transfering stills or web cam use.
Optical steady shot (not digital) is very good and will improve the shots when useing the zoom. It will drain the battery faster when being used.

Good luck with finding the perfect camcorder. I advise getting down to a local shop and playing with a few to see which ones you like.

    Hi,

Not had time to play with my new Sony TRV80 yet, but I'm pretty sure that (and the new Sony models) can do USB streaming of the video as an alternative to Firewire.

At least that is what I assume, and hope, that logo on the box means!

    Cheers
    Marc

USB can be used for streaming video, but it is only a low quality streaming around the quality of a web cam.

You can't really go wrong with a Sony camcorder.

Looking on www.ajelectronics.co.uk I see they've got the Sony TRV22 for £479.00 inc VAT and delivery, which meets all your requirements.
