I am about to commit to a future in Bedford, does anyone what it's like as a town? Decent bars; restaurants etc?? I know it's a long shot, but I can't seem to find any first hand reviews of the town.:lease:

There was that film "The Bedford Incident" .......;)

Seriously, why not check out Up My Street. Just put in the postcode of where you'll be working or living, and it'll generate more stats than you can shake a stick at.

It may not tell you where the decents places are, but it will give you a serious breakdown of the areas demographic, which is a good indication as to what facilities are available.

Infact I've just put in my current post code in Rochester and it really does give an accurate summary of the area. Apparently, interests in current affairs in this area is low! Surely not? There's also a lot of low end fast food outlets! I'm so surprised.

Tried there, found it ok, but just hoping for some first hand answers to specific questions really, without any real bias. Not sure that will be really possible mind.:(

Its not too bad. good rail link to London. Some of the outlying villages are lovely. Haven't socialised in the town as when I go there it is to visit friends.
if you don't live too far away then best bet is spend saturday there . .

I just tried upmystreet for my town. From its eating out listing
One of the restaurants no longer exists.
It missed two of the Italian restaurants - including the stand out best one.
Missed the best eat in pizza place.

other stuff...

Having lived just outside, my childhood was spent roaming Bedford for many years!!

I think for it's size, it's well developed. It has a great mixture of many things, so something should take your interest. Be it from a decent high street shopping centre (with the obligatory tesco's on the outskirts!) to a cineplex.

For eats and drinks, this is well covered as well, more so in the centre.

My favourite part is the river walk in the town centre. Its a great way on a summers day/evening to walk along, and best of all its a short cut from town to the cinema!!

Also, before I start to sound like the tourist board! :) Another good thing is the location - your only 50 minutes from Cambridge, or 30 minutes from Milton Keynes (some might say differently about the later, but I won't hear a bad word about my home town!!) :)

However, despite the above - it would be best to visit and get a feel for the place yourself.

Worked at the nearby Unilever Research lab in Colworth, and lived in Bedford around 1994, and I found it a total dive - the crap pubs/clubs, junkies all over the place (incl. my housemates) ... couldn't wait to leave the place
- purely my opinion as a 22 year old in '94

did enjoy the river walk into town centre though ;)

Thanks for all the replies folks. I have been down a couple of times, but found it a difficult place to suss out really. As has been said, it has a lovely river running through it, but then it feels kinda out of place. I was hoping for some decent small music type bars, jazz bars et al but couldnt find any. As for the areas, I can't remember seeing such large divide between the east and west side of bedford. It's very odd. However, as mentioned earlier the easy routes to London village and Cambridge is one of the main reasons for choosing it. I'm just bloody scared.
But again, ta for the replies. Anybody else??

I lived in Bedford up until 2000, and most of my family is still there, so I return a lot.

It has a bad reputation, but it's a nice place in general - it's just like any other medium-sized town; there are places you don't go if you don't want a kicking!

There's not much of a drug problem in Bedford any more (in response to the poster above), but there is a HUGE chav community, and there are currently a few problems with Eastern European immigrants and locals not getting on very well, but nothing worse than anywhere else in the country at the moment!

There's loads of nice places to eat out (big Italian and Asian communities mean good restaurants!) and the usual cinema/bowling/clubbing thing, but it all depends on what you like!

I'm pretty sure there was a couple of jazz clubs there when I was there, but I can't vouch for what they're like, if they are still open...

Have you looked at houses/areas to live in, etc? The area down by the river is the nicest, but the property is a little steep!
