Hi,

Im looking for a new kingsize bedroom mattress. I currently have a Silent Night Miracoil, for about 7 years but for the last couple of years I noticed it started to dip, where both my wife and I sleep. Hand on heart, can say we are not obese lol.

There are not many bed stores to choose from in my area, so far only been to Dreams, which is a big warehouse in the local industrial estate. The place where I got my Miracoil is now shut down. Normally, something like a mattress is one of those luxuries, i'd normally would try before I buy...

However....

It might just be me, but I have noticed loads of online mattress advertising on TV. From an untrained eye, they all appear to look the same with the "white top and grey base". Just with a different company name. The adverts I've seen this week were:
Emma
Simba
Casper
Eve

Has there been some sort of revolutionary breakthrough in bedroom mattress comfyness technology? I know nowadays, they are all vacuum packed, which must lower logistics cost. I see the adverts on all the time, so part of me thinks that they must be really good?
Has anyone got one of these online mattresses? Id be interestd to read some thoughts of other members.

Thanks in advance

I bought my mattress at ikea very comfy my sister stayed last year and I gave her the bedroom to use me on camp bed in living room, she thought the bed really comfy...... I think I paid £180 its all foam material Also they sell mattress toppers which can be 2 or 3 inches thick to make them softer
The mattress has 20 year warranty too

Agreed our IKEA HYLLSESTAD is excellent, we were that impressed we got my daughter a HOVAG.

No complaints 2 years on....

I've been looking at the online mattresses for some time now and you could add another 5 names to the list easily. 99% of the reviews seem to be positive but I've still not been convinced to take the plunge. I know they all do 100 night trials but buying a mattress without being able to even see them let alone lie on them is holding me back. I believe John Lewis sell the Simba mattress (or it could be one of the others) so I may have to take a trip in and see if it tips the balance.

I have been doing the same lately and John Lewis were doing 20% off the Simba so I ordered one on Friday. I was close to trying an OTTY but the John Lewis offer seemed like a good deal

Same as you on this. Will check out my local John Lewis

Got one of each of these last year for my new place. 1 for me and 1 for the spare room.

The hotel one was supposed to be in my room but i've ended up with the Silentnight one.

Different technologies etc but I like them both.

Not sure how many mattressman places there are around the country but they were friendly enough and delivered on time etc etc. Popped along and had a lay down on about 20 beds before I chose lol.

I know some peeps spend thousand on a mattress. I did try some £800-£1000 jobbies out but honestly, I just went with the ones that felt best at the time.

I bought a latex mattress from Ikea for the single guest bed in my house. Latex is supposed to be the firmest of the foam type matress but also the coolest.

Spent a few nights on it a few weeks ago while waiting on a new bed being delivered. Woke up every night absolutely boiling, sweating and generally too hot to be comfortable.
Had to get up and shower a couple of times as I was to uncomfortably sweaty.

It's firmness is good and it's actually quite comfortable but the heat it retains makes it unuseable for me.
I'll stick with a pocket sprung mattress.

Excellent, you will have to give us a review, after a few sleeps

I had a brill SilentNight mattress was a Mayfair Miracoil 1400 was great to sleep on and after approx 7 years the springs collapsed at the side and it had to go as it went rubbish.

I have had a go on this > HOKKÅSEN Pocket sprung mattress Medium firm/white Standard King - IKEA and it felt great but you can't tell after 20 minutes on a mattress in a shop really can you but it felt good, and when/if I change my current one (Sealy terramo, it's crap just trying to convince her it has to go) then I will probably get that, it's £450.

They have a decent range of mattresses in there to have a go of if Ikea is near enough to you, a lot on here go for Hypnia memory foam jobs too, there is a thread somewhere abouts on here.

Given how soft and cozy and warm a memory foam type mattress is in the winter.
I've had one for the past few months and can vouch for that.

Also aware how HOT it's going to be in the summer.

It just occurred to me (yes I had an idea. Probably a stupid one, but hey!)

Why does someone not make a kind of split/flip mattress where, in the winter you turn it, to lay on the foam side for a nice warm cozy heat that gives you.
Then when the weather gets warmer, you flip it over and lay on the pocket sprung side, still comfy, but has more air flow and cooler for summer use.

Silly idea ?

Nope, there are some, here is one Dual Season Memory Foam Double Mattress | Sleepland Beds there are others too :) Luxury Dual Season | Beds & Mattresses | Shire Bed Co Loads of em.

Yay, so I'm not as daft as I look ;)
Never knew they existed, but seems an excellent idea, giving you the best of both worlds.

We got a new Tempur foam mattress a few months ago. Absolutely love it. I don't find it overly hot so I don't think summer will be a problem.

Knew as soon as I sat on it that I'd be buying it. For a split second it feels too firm, then (best way I could describe it at the time) it hugs your arse.

Same when you lie down, it takes a second and then you just sink into the foam and it is incredibly comfortable. And bloody expensive.

All foams come in a range of firmnesses, if you've found Latex to be the firmest that's because the mattresses you've seen have happened to use firmer variants.

Latex foam can be made very soft, you can get Latex foam pillows and it's sometimes used as the softest top layer on expensive mattresses.

These days you can even get visco-elastic ('memory') latex foam.

The main reason to make foam from Latex is that it's more durable than foam made from Polyurethane.

Latex is sold in different density and softness ratings, i.e you can have a 65Kg m3 in soft medium or hard or a 55Kg or whatever, however they are harder to obtain in the UK than in the USA, UK has mainly memory foam more readily available, we are so far behind them in that respect.

What is "visco-elastic ('memory') latex foam" that's a new one on me, any links?

Latex is inherently conforming so why do they need a Visco Elastic one? it seems pointless.

Subscribed. I’m looking to get a new mattress too but haven’t got a clue what. Keep seeing all these online new too but think I may see if I can try ne out in John Lewis first

John Lewis online says they are sold out of Simba beds. But might still pop in over weekend to see if they have a demo bed

Another vote here for John Ryan by design. Bought a king size pocket sprung from them a few years ago and it was one of the best purchases I've ever made.

Outs is a “million” pocket sprung :) But for my children they now each have a double foam mattress. The oldest one a Hypnia one, and the youngest had an Ikea one but recently upgraded her bed to a double and now also a hypnia one.

Soon we’ll be upgrading our superking pocket spring also to a hypnia one. I love the firmness with proper temperature control. Theirs are definitely more comfy than ours.

^^This^^

You spend 1/3 of your life in bed, so why skimp on a cheap uncomfortable mattress. Pocket sprung is the way to go.
The John Ryan site has loads of essential info and their stuff is very good. I bought one of theirs a few years ago and it was one of my best purchases.
Make sure to get a decent base, or at least cover a slatted base with 6mm MDF. Also look into mattress toppers.

Cover a slatted base with MDF? I hope I misunderstand you, but that is the worst advise you can give. Why would you want to do that?

EDIT: Or in conjunction with a pocket sprung mattress only I guess? Not with other types of mattresses I hope...

A slatted base is used to keep costs low. Sprung slats are an attempt to provide some extra springing. The problem with slats is that mattress can slump between the slats, the slats can "nip" the mattress cover and lead to early wear. Sprung slats can lead to a central dip in the mattress.

A slatted base is not suitable for pocket sprung or foam mattress. They need a flat base, either a solid top or ideally a pocket sprung base.

Funny, guess the rest of the world is wrong once again compared to the UK. Before I came to the UK I've never ever even seen a solid based bed. Except for a waterbed. Many a slated base is much more expensive than a piece of MDF so that argument to hold the cost down doesn't work either.

I guess we have to agree to disagree.
