I was wondering if anybody else had brought a copy of the limited edition version of Guero that included both a regular CD and a DVD-A/DVD-V disk as I am having problems accessing the supposed high res mixes of the album that are on the DVD.

My player (a Denon 3910) can successfully play the high res tracks on the dozen or so other DVD-As that I have its just that with the latest Beck disk it only plays as a standard Dolby Digital 5.1 or 2.0 mix complete with videos. The disk is clearly marked as DVD audio/video and the packaging also states that it has DD 2.0/5.1 and the DVD-A 2.0/5.1 mixes.

    Any suggestions?

Can you access tracks via the player's navigation control or do you have to use the disc menus? It could be just the menu authoring that's bad.
I use a Meridian player and use the player's group/track controls whenever a disc menu gets iffy.

I've already tried switching the audio track using the menu and using the audio button on the denon remote - both only give me the option for the DD 2.0 and 5.1 :(

    thanks for the suggestion.

My copy plays the DVD-A track no probs. I have a Pioneer though.

Are you sure that you are playing the disc via the analogue 5.1 outputs and not the digital out?

Yup, I'm playing via the 5.1 analogue outputs.

Do you get the menu option to select the DVD-A track or does it just automaticly play it?

Actually what options do you get under voice(s) on the menu screen?

Right, I think I've sussed it and its my own stupidity

On the Denon there is an option to select which DVD type you want to default to - Audio or Video, mine was set to Video.

    Thanks for your help guys.

So now that you have it playing, is at any good, the album I mean? I am always on the lookout for new DVD-A releases and would appreciate any comments.

Yeah its good but not a patch on his previous albums. I've had a MP3 bootleg of the album for ages so I've had plenty of time for it to grow on me and I'm a long time beck fan (since odelay) so this was quite a disappointment for me, especially after the excellent sea change (also available as a DVD-A).

As a DVD-A disk its pretty good, DD 2.0 and 5.1 mixes complete with videos for each song. The videos have two angles and they use the subtitle option to provide "streams" on each video that can be changed by selecting a different subtitle. The DVD-A audio has some still pictures set to either a 2.0 or 5.1 mix.

check out the beck site for more info on the disk:

I found the 5.1 mix a little gimmicky, but I'm not a fan of using the rear speakers for the vast majority of music anyway.

Was just going to suggest checking what disc default you'd set the player to...but, you've already sussed it.

    Hope it's all ticketyboo now.

It seems there are some issues with some Pioneer (who usually play anything) models and the 'Guero' DVD-A:
