Belarus arrests locals after Swedes parachute in 800 teddy bears
Yes, four Swedes parachuted 800 teddy bears with pro democracy logos so the Belrus government arrested a number of locals then deported the Swedish diplomats. Frankly that is the least of the problems for anyone living there.
It puts our moaning into prespective.

Hmm yes the only former Soviet state that didn't rename their KGB.

No wonder Tikhanovskaya scarpered.

Hopefully her friends and relatives back in Belarus haven’t received the same treatment from Lukashenko’s goons, although she looks petrified in this video.

Just mind boggling that this can be allowed to happen in Europe in this day and age

Not mind boggling, truth of why is here:

Putin at it again I'd say. Russia ensuring its man stays in power.

BBC News - Belarus: Vladimir Putin 'pledges support' for President Lukashenko

Unless Russian's sort out their own Tyrant he will continue to interfere in his neibouring countries.

Are we not fortunate that our police & military serve democracy because no matter how you look at it no repressive power/government can stay in power without their backing anywhere in the world.

Watched the news before and it's great to see the solidarity out on the streets. Masses of people.

Lukashenko now looking weaker and weaker as every day passes. He must be hating it. Which means of course everyone else is loving it.

With any joy another tin-pot dictator will soon bite the dust.

Trouble is for people to force change it needs to be millions on the street, not 10's of thousands.

Not enough momentum so I think its going to fissile out.

Similar in Russia, too many happy to plod along with what they know even though its obvious to outside world Putin is just a bullyboy strong man leaching wealth from its people to himself and his mates.

Numbers are still too small. Needs to be 50% of adult population out on the streets or those in power will argue its a vocal minority and ignore.

Good little segment on Channel 4 News about the ongoing battle for democracy.

Covid and the bitter weather has stopped the mass protesting for now, but the people have not given up. Good on them.

And like with Myanmar, no-one interested in helping them get it.

Another big signal over to the East here of how weak the West is becoming. Pressure on Putin could and should help put an end to this.

Sorry this may not be directly relevant to the thread title but seems as appropriate a place as any of the other Russia centric threads -

(EDIT: Ignore above, now this was moved to a more appropriate thread, thanks!)

It's not directly related to Russia, but Lukashenko is just as dictatorial as the Putin regime and it's no surprise he would do something like this.
