I'm sure I've missed this somewhere, but I recorded a widescreen programme from BBC1 via Sky and noticed that my TV autoswitched to 16/9 viewing modewhen played back from VHS. It wasn't recorded in letterbox mode, it was proper 16/9 anamorphic/

Now I've never noticed this before, not that I record very often!

I know that this feature exists, but I've not known that a Skybox will output the necessary WSS info to the VCR scart socket so that recordings can 'instruct' the tv which apsect ratio is needed.

Has it been like this for ages? or just recently?

I connect my Panasonic NVHD710 video to the VCR scart socket of the Pace 2600 digibox, then Sky TV scart goes to the TV ... all very normal.

My ntl Pace box has always done this with my old Toshiba VT-728B VCR.

I'm no expert, but as far as I'm aware it's like this:

The STB won't strip out any lines from the picture, so if the WSS signal is present in line 23 when the broadcaster transmits it, it should pass through the STB unscathed. The set-top box may also read this and switch pin 8, depending on whether or not it's been designed to do this.

I notice that if a taped widescreen broadcast is paused or fast-forwarded, the TV will switch out of 16:9 mode. When normal playback is resumed, it switches back to 16:9.

Yes that sounds like the line 23 switching - when you fast forward, the information is lost so the TV reverts to the previous aspect ratio that it was set to, once playback commences, the signal is back and the line23 WSS signal instructs the TV which mode to view in.
