Just watching Red Dwarf on BBC (Sunday night) via my sky box and the lip sync is absolutely awful. I've noticed this on BBC a couple of times before. Has anyone else had this problem ?
I'm not going through an AV amp or anything complicated.

I recorded Top Gear and had no audio problems, at least according to my own eyes and ears:)
The audio was fed via optical to an AV amp and video straight to a RPTV.

I wonder if it's my Sky box - an old Panasonic DSB20 ?

The lip sync problem is mentoned in the latest issue of What Video 'readers problems' section - ok so I was browsing through it in Smiths
Basically it's the broadcaster at fault as far as I can tell. So people have no need to blame their own machines for this one.

Since the problem is only evident on some hardware then surely the STB has to be a factor?
After all if two people watch the same program and one gets sync errors and the other doesn't and other factors being more or less equal then it can't all be down to the broadcaster.
A few years back in the early days of R2 DVD's there were many disks that only had audio sync problems on Pioneer players but played fine on other manufacturers machines. If I recall the mastering of those DVD's had minor sync errors that were compensated for by some players but in the case of Pioneer they were exaggerated. So yes the source had problems but so did the users hardware and in the case of dsat I suspect it might be a combination of issues once again.

Some people notice broadcaster caused lipsync issues more than others; have you any reason to believe that the broadcaster's lipsync will be perfect?

Furthermore, those with digital display will find this issues compounded by addition of couple of fields processing time to make a progressive picture.

Quite right lip sync issues are very subjective and I have no reason nor have I stated in this thread that the broadcast source is always perfect. All I can say hand on heart is that in 5 years of using SKY D I have only seen 3 instances of lip sync errors and since I dabble in video editing/converting I can spot minute errors (at least in my own work).
My last post in reference to the Pioneer DVD issues was meant to demonstrate that the source could be less than perfect but only become noticeable on certain hardware.
Of course as you say once you factor in AV amps, LCD/Plasma panels etc the waters become muddy and it's much harder to pin down if the problem are at source or due to other variables.

I agree with all of the above, but the problem when I was watching Red Dwarf was the lip sync was about a full second out - the worst I've ever seen it.

Funny the lip sink problem has seem to appear about the time regional news programs when digital on Sky. I noticed the lag between terrestrial and the sat signal got a lot bigger.
