But no one seems to care, at least in these forums ... neither do I!

But it made me laugh that BBC announced World Cup and Wimbledon in HDTV, and there are no mentions of the tennis but lots about the football. Should that be telling the BBC something?

Maybe this would change if they reintroduced the knicker view camera angles for the ladies' games?

Actually I thought that was great news. The tennis is another thing that suffers from not being able to see what the hell happened without slo-mo replays.

    And Planet Earth, ooo yes.

But both pale into insignificance compared to the World Cup, clearly!

BBC's Wimbledon coverage has always been fantastic, and it continues to get better each year.
To have it in HD would be great!

I don't approve of the way the BBC gets the rights to the event but there is no denying the fact that they so cover the whole competition superbly, if they had done that for footy in the 1980's then SKY would never have got their feet under the table:)

So you'd rather the event went to the highest bidder, meaning we'd probably all have to pay a sub to see it? Hard to understand that POV.

Are you sure no one is interested in seeing Maria Sharapova or Anna Kournikova in HD?

"15-0 to the pretty one", :D

I would say also that the BBC were pushed into this one by foreign broadcasters eg in the US / Australia who wanted to show it in HD.

I was hoping no-one would post to this thread, then I could say that it crashed out like Henman at (any) tennis tournament. ;)

    No I didn't say that:)

I doubt very much the LTA would give their premier event to the highest bidder unless that bidder met their requirments so a high bid only criteria is irrelevant.

What I mean is that the protected events means that Wimbledon is more or less only a practical event for the BBC and that means they have little competition and therefore get it on the cheap.
A genuine bidding process would mean that the LTA and be extension the thousands of young tennis players would get more funding and I honestly believe as long as the BBC were in the ballpark bid wise they would still get the event.

Given the choice between SKY and the BBC assuming their bids were similar I have no doubt at all the BBC would be choosen, they have proved beyond any measure they are equipped to deliver the event with innovation and quality.
