For those of you having problems with Battlefield 2 along the lines of the game stuttering, taking ages for it to 'verify client files', accessing the hard drive during game etc I would strongly recommend you upgrade to 2GB memory if you can.

Three of us in our clan have done this and it makes a world of improvement. I've gone from it taking about 1min for it to verify client files to between 3 and 20 seconds. The stuttering when the map has initially loaded has completely gone and the game justs runs so much smoother.

Obviously it doesn't cure all problems, if you are having crashing problems etc but just increasing the memory and doing nothing else has made a world of difference to me.

1GB should be the very minimum. The server screen takes about 200mb, then just to load the maps it takes about 800mb. So you can see how it uses 1GB memory pretty quickly and then needs to use the hard disc for extra space.

I've ordered another gig of PC2700 for mine . Might as well memory is pretty cheap these days.

Im using 2 gig and it seems to run very smoothly. I wasnt aware until now that the extra memory would make such a difference.

Considering how big these maps are and that its a fully online game im not surprised.

One other thing. defraging your RAM might make some difference too. But dont quote me on that!

I haven't bought the full game but do agree about performance improvements with increased RAM. Comparing the BF2 demo when I had just 512mb of RAM to now (where I have 1.5Gb of RAM) there is a noticeable improvement.

Had a few games last night and looked at my peak commit charge and it was over 1.6GB

If your running at low or medium textures you probably will find 1GB will suffice but for those of us who like all the eye candy then you need more to run at high or ultra high settings. ;)

Moved up to 2Gb of PC3200 just as we were starting the Server up. Agree fully, it makes loading up hell of a lot quicker.

Another tweak to try (As well as dropping the textures to medium, which has been mentioned before :smashin: ) is to adjust lighting from high to medium - make very little difference to any eye candy but gains a few extra FPS - worth a try for anyone who is struggling with choppy play.

I would also agree to having 2 Gig. My hard drive was thrashing away when the map loaded and by the time I got into the game everyone had jumped into all the vehicles and left me stranded :(

Now with 2 gig no hard drive access at all and game runs real smooth

It really makes a difference doesn't it!

When the map has loaded, you have pick of the best vehicles and can be capturing the first base before most of the other team have even spawned.

You lot are a bad, bad influence. I thought 1GB was always enough, now I've gone and ordered another 1GB because of this thread. Will let you know my thoughts when it arrives.

    Broke again :(

I know some people don't seem to have any prob running the game with 1 gig, so if it plays smooth and you get into the game during the countdown then you should be ok.....

This has been one expensive game, a new motherboard, PSU, CPU, 2 gig ram and video card so far  Just hope I play it long enough to make it all worth while :)

To be fair, using 1GB doesn't cause me any major problems. When I first join the server, it stutters along for the first 30 seconds or so, but after some moving around it becomes totally smooth. Is this the textures loading?

As for expense, I bought a new PC off the forums to play the latest games! It was worth it as I've only just got around to playing HL2, which looks stunning. As for memory, I'm sure more and more games will need it so its not a bad investment, and prices seem quite cheap. :)

Oh yeah. I'm not that bad considering how little time I've put in . Can't understand why I'm not private first class yet though as I've gone over the 500 point mark and the bar for PFC is full ( has been for a couple of days).

Don't know if its a glitch at BFHQ or not.

Got my sidewinder FF2 working for the jets last night in the 30 mins or so Ihad to play about... much better! And I'm thinking of switching to assault rather than spec-ops.

You do lose the nade launcher but you get regular nades instead ;)
I'm liking the G3 for it's power as it brings people down quick and is very accurate. In certain maps it's better but the nade launcher is a must on maps with lots of buggy's. Very satisfying despatching three people in a buggy as they attempt to run you down :rotfl:

This game would be even better if it wasn't for the muppets that run in front of your tank and then punish you for the privilige :thumbsdow Hopefully the next patch will sort out a few TK'ing issues that just are not fair :(

It takes a little while for the stats to change over to pfc. It took me three or four games re-logging in to get my copral stripes. I got promoted to copral on three seperate servers :rotfl: I wanted my weapon unlock so was a little inpatient.

    nice accuracy btw ;)

Aaah so your mingedribble. Always wondered who that was on our server with a name like that! I'm also in IGI.

My next unlock when I eventually reach corporal will be the medic or maybe the G3 or maybe the DAO. As you can tell I have not made my mind up yet!

    My stats here: http://bf2s.com/player/gbh4/

didnt know you were mingdribble (nice name by the way very tastfull :D ) i was in a server with you on sunday afternoon (not the AVF one it was empty) didnt realise it was a fellow AVF'r. i dont get to play this game as often as id like really only played a few hours i think.

back on topic 1gb is fine for me as UrbanT says it does take about 20 secs or so to fully cache the textures then it runs supersmooth on my system at least

IMO,any of you guys that paid for the server should hardly ever go on any other servers,if yours is empty ,just join and wait, you would be surprised how quick it fills up, it just needs that initial couple of players ;) Use the time to practice your helli flying or something.

Thats exactly what I do. My stats would be a lot better if I played other servers, but I must have spent a good 3-4 hours hanging around waiting for players. I just spent the time practicing flying :)
