I just read a review of this Japanese film in Empire and I have to say I'm intrigued and very interested. Has anyone seen it? I understand it's been out in R3 land for a while now and I was wondering if it was woth taking a gamble on.

Anyone? Pooch or Rambo - I'm looking at you....

The only English subbed disc available at the moment is the Hong kong vcd, the Jap dvd doesn't have subs and is particularly expensive too, so I'd wait a while if I were you as Universe should have a disc out in Hong Kong soon, although the subs will probably be the usual pidgeon English, but it'll be a cheap as chips, so it won't be too bad.

As for the film, well, don't expect a bloodbath. It's more way-out than most Western cinema ever gets, but it's got a reputation for kiddie violence that's a bit exaggerated and tends to make people miss what the film's actually like. It's not Takeshi Kitano's best film, but even when he's below par he's better than most Hollywood actors could ever dream of being. Anyway, I put its rep out of my mind and enjoyed it, it's got a lot more dark humour than most critics are picking up on (or maybe it's just me), and I have to say that its political messages are driven home with a sledgehammer, but it does give a strange insight into the whacked-out world of the Japanese psyche. If you can put the reviews out of your mind then I think you'll enjoy it, but it's not quite the festival of hardcore violence that reviewers have made it out to be.

Didn't this movie get shown recently at FrightFest 2001 at the Prince Charles Theatre, Leceister Square?

Popular opinion has that it's (and I quote) "a stone groove".

I was considering buying "Brother" Ducan, as I'm a big Kitano fan. I hope that it's punctuated with lots of guys staring at each other for 6 hours then commiting acts of considerable nastiness.

Tee,

I haven't seen the film yet, though I will be doing so before the month ends, at my local arthouse cinema! It looks corking, and I've heard lots of good reviews about it. Plus. if "Beat" Takashi is in it, then it MUST be cool!

As soon as I see it, I'll let you folks know of the results!

I am seriously thinking of ordering Battle Royale (DTS!)and Taxi 2 (DTS!) from dddhouse.com
but I am keen to know what the audio and picture are like on the dvds (r they originals or "hot"!)

What is the shipping rate (I can't see anywhere on the site)?

Do they have burned in sub-titles or timecodes, and lastly what is the average delivery time?

help would be very much appreciated!!

This is my 1st order with them but my copy was ordered just a few days ago and dispatched today, it takes ( according to the boys over at THEDVDFORUMS ) about 5 days to arrive and no matter how BIG your orders they NEVER get caught by customs, so thats nice.

By "HOT" do you meen are they copies ? by all accounts ( again according to people in the know ) they are original R3 versions of all films with subtitles available as an option, however the DTS language track is in the original language, there are no dubbing ( which in my opinion is a good thing )

And as for price, well it has cost me around £8 and that INCLUDES shipping, so its less than going to the cinema and by all accounts worth every penny.

Not to sure about TAXI 2 though, sorry

Well as im on nights ( just up for a drink ) I have not watched more than the 1st 5 mins or so, but the picture quality is very, very good and the DTS sound ( what I have heard ) was also good.

Quality of the subtitles was very good as well with them being very easy to read

Finally got round to watching it, all I can say is it is Fantastic.

The picture quality is not the best but with a film this good who cares, also the DTS sound is great, bullets fly all around the room and there is great steering even with subtle things.

The film is gory and will probably offend loads of people but it does what it does very very well.

Order it now ( along with Brother ) and enjoy them both

Well I watched it tonight and thought it was MUCH better that I expected it would be. Some of the action was quality, not bad acting and the overall film was very enjoyable. The DTS sound was too bassey (?!) and loud but when the volume was set to an acceptable level the quality was very good - very good gunshots and explosions and fantastic rear effects.

Thanks to everyone one who recommended the film and supplier (DDHouse).

BTW, as I enjoyed this, what else would you recommend?

Cheers

HI,

Tee - If you liked "Battle Royale" then check out other Beat Takeshi Kitano films:

Brother
Sonatine
Boiling Point
Violent Cop
Hana-Bi

Not all of these may be out on DVD yet, but you can certainly still rent/buy them on VHS. His films are truly amazing!

Also, I saw "Battle Royale" at my local arthouse cinema on Thursday afternoon. All I can say, is that this is one mother of a movie, and is very, very violent in places. The whole concept of children killing one another, is not at all a pleasant one, and I'm quite surprised that the humble BBFC passed it uncut, especially since it's been banned in its home country!

Can't wait for an R1 or R2 release, preferably with lots of extras, and behind the scenes stuff!

Pooch
