Only just purchased a new Macbook Air, less than a week old.

The only thing I'm slightly concerned about is the battery life.

It is currently unplugged and showing 81%, however the time remaining is showing 2:32hours.

I thought that these were supposed to have 5-7 hour battery lives or am I completely wrong?

Depends entirely on what you're doing on it. For example Im just browsing the web at the moment on my Macbook Pro. I have 45% remaining and 2:31 time left.

It is said online that if you fully charge the battery, use an app like caffine and run the battery down till it turns itself off, do not use the mac for five hours, then fully charge it, it will train the battery. I do this every couple of month and the rest of the time charge whenever I'm near power and my battery on my MBP lasts ages. Look at this apple link

    Hope this helps, Peter.

According to the 2nd link the calibration does not apply to any MacBook or Air with built-in battery so doesn't apply to the OP.

My Macbook Air (13") is about 10 weeks old and I have just fully charged the battery. With virtually nothing running and with the screen dimmed to a minimum I got the battery life up to 10h:23m! Mind you after 5 minutes of use it is down to 8h:23m.

Download 'Coconut Battery' and see what it says about your battery, for example mine shows current capacity at 6539 mAh or 98%, the design capacity was 6700 mAh, that is after 20 load cycles.
