agree with the review - this is a major upgrade in picture and sound

don't agree with the overall score - a 9 for me

and the movie itself is never a 7 - not dark knight of course but that film is a 10 - this film maybe an 8.5

if you liked the burton / Keaton films then these 2 are no brainer buys for me

Worth mentioning that a lot of the sound effects (gun shots, batmobile shields, grapple gun etc) have been replaced with new effects.

Disc turned up the other day there but only had a chance to sample a few scenes which looked and sounded awesome. The replacement gunshots and batmobile sound effects are a welcome change for me as I can remember sitting in the cinema as a kid thinking 'that sounds like it's from Aliens', somewhat cheapening the overall experience.

A good but not great film. Definitely suffered from being massively over-hyped at the time of it's release, can remember my 12 year old self being slightly underwhelmed after standing in a queue for hours to see it.

Regardless, looking forward to watching it on Friday night with my eldest!

Agree with the review, apart from the need to mention the new Sound effects etc, and the film deserves more than a 7 surely??

      @Simon Crust

Will you be reviewing all four or is it a bit much to ask to make you sit through Kilmer and Clooney? :p

I'll definitely be getting the first two, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin can suck on my Batarang however. Not a day one for me though, I'll wait for the discounts.

as I and others have said the film is way better than a 7

if you mark the first as a 7 what do you mark the4th one at? can you go below 0?

These first two films still rank as my favourite Batman films ever, over the top, great sets and lavish.

      Thank for the Review Simon

IMHO, Michael Keaton was perfect for Batman - not surpassed until the Nolan Era.
And, for me, Jack Nicholson will always be the perfect embodiment of The Joker. No disrespect to the superb performance of Heath Ledger, but that felt like a "Modern Day" interpretation to me.

Sigh! Out with the wallet! ;)

not an issue for me - aren't the sound effects "changed" every time the track is re mixed to atmos? I assume they changed any effects to suit the atmos upmix?

Watched it at the pictures in it's day.
Need to sit down over the weekend and watch it.
Keaton and Nicholson a winning combination..
      No Bale style grunting :D

      Will always be a classic.
Probably not for the young audience who have grown up watching today's CGI.

      Some trivia:
Nicholson never took a wage for his work but instead had it in his contract a % of the profits.
      Made him millions.
      Enjoy

Batman 1989 is one of my top 10 all time favourite movies. I have the previous blu ray set and also bought the set on US iTunes, which has been upgraded to 4k Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. My question is whether I should shell out £80 for the 4 movies on UHD (which lacks the DV and don’t have any new extras).
I took a look at the some scenes from Batman 1989 last night via the ATV, and it looked stunning.

Is Dolby Vision worth the upgrade over HDR10 really? I always seen HDR having a brighter and more vivid image that DV on Netflix.

No they are not. Remixing a soundstage so the existing effects are placed more accurately within it is nowhere near the same as replacing a sound effect with a completely different one.

The original effects did not need to be changed to suit the Atmos mix.

Not replaced by new effects but replaced by sound effects rehashed from other films  Warner Bros had a time restraint on getting the disc out on schedule so they borrowed sound effects gun shots etc from other movies instead of creating brand new sound effects. Still seems like they done a decent job with what they had to work with

The reviewer didn't give the movie story rating a 7 he gave it a 8. I'm with you on a 8.5 it's the best Batman film after the excellent Dark Knight.

You've got is this the wrong way round, the 4k sound effects are new, it was the original cinema release sound effects that were rushed and therefore borrowed from Dirty Harry and Aliens.

In saying that they should have included the original audio from the old blu ray on the disc even if it does sound quite flat compared to the new Atmos mix.

Not quite, they were rushed when it came to releasing the film in 1989 so used stock sound effects and those from other films, the new track has replaced these with new effects.

Yeah oops, would of been good to keep the original mix as well as the new mix for those who like discs as faithful to the original cinema release.

he did originally give 7 for the film and later edited to an eight blaming "fat fingers" - even an 8 is a bit mean for me - post #13 above

Although the film's script isn't very good, I've always admired the aesthetics of the film. It really captured the comic book look. In terms of screenplay, the first two Nolan films are head and shoulders above it.

See I just dont get that, I must have watched Batman begins 4 or 5 times and just cant like it... I want to but it just doesnt work for me. The next two were better but for pure entertainment these original two nailed it, like a comic on the screen.
      for me at least......
