Finally got to watch King Kong over the weekend, what a treat for the ears. :D

The amount of extremely low bass present is shocking. I had to watch it over two days because just over half way through the film I had experienced so much bass that I felt totally overjoyed and fulfilled, until the next day fo course.

Normally while watching or listening to a film I cant wait until the next lfe effect. This must be one of the best and longest demo of lfe in existence at the moment.

I took this dvd over to a friends house to try on his sub which is a little less capable than mine and although he had watched the film previously it hadnt made it such a memorable film for him, and I can see why. We watched the dinosaur stampede through to when Kong battles to save the girl from the big beasts and although it did sound fairly impressive, the bass certainly didnt shake me to my boots. :D Additionaly there is so much lfe during the ships sailing as it rocks in the sea.

So the moral of this story is - there is bass and there is real bass. How many of you have been totally shocked by this films bass content and what sub did you hear it through?

yes KK does have some impressive bass scenes some around the 20hz mark .. first time watched using an svs pb12+.

ps: the hd-dvd sounds a lot better ;)

Why would the high def dvd sound better, doesnt it just affect the picture quality i.e. higher definition?

Doesn't it have uncompressed audio or at least a higher bitrate DDPlus? (I honestly don't know on this title).

Agreed KK is pretty good with the LFE but I find the Thompson machine gun sound effects (however realistic they may or may not be) pathetic, really soft and farty ... it annoys me everytime I watch it :thumbsdow. They really should take some lessons from Open Range, now that is proper gunfire :D

PS. ttree remind us what sub you are using?

hi, the dvd has standard dolby digital @ 384kbs

the hd-dvd has full bitrate dolby digital + @ 1536kbs (1.5mbs)

sadly, no un-compressed audio for KK atm .. otherwise it would better still :)

:offtopic: I had my first play with uncompressed on Blu-Ray via my HTPC last night. I kept flicking through the various formats and you could certainly tell the difference although I can't be 100% sure I have the system setup to get the most from the analogue connections...

The "standard" DD soundtrack on most DVDs is 448kbps...I've not come across many 384kbps discs, though there are a few out there.

I was very suprised when i first heard watched this film as i was hearing DD sounding like dts. This film's audio particularly stood out to me because everything was so much clearer and defined, LFE had more control than usual and everything just sounded 'right'. I've noticed this with other films too, like Bandits. But then, they were mastered on Miller & Kreisel :D

There are plenty of bass overload moments, that'll excite many people. 'War Of The Worlds', 'King Kong' etc are balanced to provide enough mid bass to sound decent on any system, whilst providing enough DEEP bass for real subs.

If I ever meet an alien invasion head on, or a T-rex, I'll retract this.

For me, the best ones are the ones that deliver realistic sounds in a believable way. A real sub delivers the weight that makes these movies tangible.

Step forward 'Open Range', 'Black Hawk Down', 'Master and Commander' and 'Moulin Rouge'. Awsome.

I've fired plenty of real guns, stood next to canons/military guns and flown on enough helicopters, to know that these get as close as I've heard otherwise. Once the HD format war settles, I look forward to hearing them even closer to reality.

Moulin Rouge is included for just being one of the best recorded soundtracks ever. On that scale, 'House of Flying Daggers' warrants a mention.

Children of men has a great soundtrack too if you are talking about realism and one spectacular sphincter wobbling bass moment, that scared me witless :)

Couldn't agree more - a fantastic film too.

From the sphincter master, that's high praise indeed. I've ordered it.

Agreed, the (SPOILER)
cafe explosion
didn't do anything to me or make me jump the second time when I watched it (after I purchased my Monolith) but the various other explosions and effects were superb.

I've not seen this film, is it really worth me getting hold of a copy?

I think the difference that I noticed with KK is the amount of LFE content. There is very deep bass in virtually every chapter and I dont mean the crash bang wallop type, but as Russ said the type of low bass that imparts a life like sound to normal scenes. I think its one of the best.

I/ve got Casino Royal to watch next weekend, I wonder if this will be its equal?

TS2 is worth getting purely for the intro yes.

will second that, it is rather good :smashin: not a bad film as well .. although it may help if you've seen the first one :)

i watched casino royale a while back and was shocked by the bass levels .. i wont ruin it for you by telling you what scenes, but you wont be dissapointed  :D

i got my free casino royale blu-ray from sony today .. think i may have to watch it again ;)

Just played Toy Story 2 intro at 0dB just to remind myself. I'm going to seem out of step here, but whats the fuss?

I'm pigeon holing it with all the other stuff that has bass for the sake of it. Surely the opening battle scene in Master And Commander is far more impressive? It rattles windows/doors/ornaments and the cat (impervious through experience) actually leaves the room.

Or am I just a reality bass junky?

Russell

Agreed the opening battle scene in Master and Commander makes the hair stand up on my neck. Mind you, I feel that much of the incredible slam from the cannons come from my speakers rather than the sub

I'm not surprised with them PMCs. They look like beasts!

yes, the M&C is awesome too, but in a more understated way. perhaps its the PB12's delivery of TS2, but it is one of the few things I've played that properly shakes the room. Mind you, I did have it tund to 16hz - perhaps that helped.

i also have my pb12+ in 16hz tune .. and even at -15 it sounds good.
