There is an interesting article in Hi-Fi News March 2003 edition.

Page 51 Bass management 'The Basics'

A 6 AV Amp shoot out reveals that Quote ' For Music at least, my advice would be to avoid any bass management regardless of speaker size. Just set all to 'Large' and the Subwoofer to 'on' - even if you do not have one - to defeat bass management and realise the cleanest sound.

    The Amps are:

    JVC RX-Dp10
    ONKYO TX-SR700E
    PIONEER VSX-D2011
    ROTEL RSX-1055
    SONY STR-VA333ES
    YAMAHA RXV-1300

Included in the tests are facts/figures that show variable distortion figures too. It would be far easier for you to read the review than for me to plagerise it here.

    ---

Also, in March 2003 edition of HiFi Choice - a 4 Subwoofer Test.

what a load of ???? that was. Why test 4 subs?? Surely more than 4 would be better?? 6-8 even. No facts on hz levels, spl, etc.

Just subjectiveness and what appears to be manufaturers figures. Which is fine in most cases but science is an art so use it. Which leads me to this........ They are after all telling us about the Science of Bass in a seperate article only a few pages away prior to the test.

The subs were (I think) Ruark Vita 50, Rel Q150e, Velodyne - Spl 800 and TiTAN Saturn.

    Price Range (£400-£975)

To conclude Re:Hi-Fi Choice Sub test... Why? and if your interested the REL Q150e came out as the overall winner.

What a surprise. You could stick a dead chicken inside any REL Q sub and it would still win a sub shootout in the popular mags. It's a waste of time the others turning up.

They declare Quote ' Well, at £900, I do not believe Pioneer is making a huge profit on this extensive chunk of AV Hardware. The VSX-D2011 is heavyweight bargain, and no mistake.

    -------
    Onkyo least impressive ('limited power...'
    JVC - ('limited Power..'
Sony - ( 'trying to hard to pack in so much in an affordable package' )
Yam - good medium between - dryness and raunchy power...
    Rotel ('Raunchy Power')
    Pioneer ('offers analytical dryness')
    -------
