Basic question about AV reciever

Hi

Sorry if this is a basic question, I've always had an all-in-one out-of-the-box type set up before so unsure about the following..

Anyway, would this SONY STRDH500 at Richer Sounds - HI-FI Separates, Home Cinema, Speakers, MP3 DVD Portables, Plasma LCD, etc. enable me to plug my xbox and bluray player both HDMI into it, and then have a HDMI out to my projector? Using a optical cable to my surround sound?

Just been doing some research on here about it and from what I can gather I'd need serperate inputs from the xbox and BD player as the receiver doesnt process HDMI sound? Is that correct? It's not too much of a problem but I'd prefer one that didn't require the additional audio inputs.. Can anyone recommend a reciever which I only need the one HDMI cable for audio and vision, preferably cheap as poss

Thanks

Next model up the Sony STRDH800 (~£280) will do what you want.

Also the Onkyo 507 at £250 will be suitable.
If you go with the 500 you will not be able to get the HD audio formats from your bluray player.

Not quite right , the receiver will do sound over HDMI, it just doesnt decode the new HD audio formats , it can handle standard DTS and Dolby digital just fine over HDMI.

Most players these days can decode the new HD formats and output them as LPCM , this receiver can handle that no problem.

Your not quite right, the OP is correct, the DH500 does not decode any audio over HDMI, it only passes it thru to the TV, you need a seperate audio connection for the audio to be output by the connected speakers.

Manual P19.

Wow , it doesnt do sound from the HDMI !!! I didnt think anyone was still making such basic receivers let alone Sony , I thought that was early models only.

Manufacturers basic models are still video only over HDMI, the latest onkyo 307 is the same.

Sony STRDH500
Yamaha RXV365
Onkyo TXSR307
Pioneer VSX519

All have HDMI interfaces, but no HDMI audio. They simply switch video and pass it through via HDMI.

The cheapest models to have HDMI audio are the Onkyo YXSR507 and Yamaha RXV465. None of the AV amps below £250 has such abilities.

There's only really the Onkyo YXSR507, Yamaha RXV465 and the Sony STRDH800 below £300 that incorporate a full HDMI repeater and HDMI audio abilities. This is why those three models get recommended as much as they do when people ask about entry level budget amps with HD and HDMI audio abilities.
