I want to buy a simple DVD player to connect to my Toshiba 28" Nicam TV. I don't want home cinema, just a regular DVD player. Should I look any further than the Sony DVP-NS305?

    It's a great player. I have the previous model, the DVP NS-300. I don't think you'll be disappointed :)

Welcome to the world of "they're all about £120, buggered if I can decide" :)

Don't know about the Sony, but the usual suspects worth considering at that sort of money are the Toshiba SD220 and the Pioneer 350.

My suspicion is that if you brought the Sony you'd still be delighted, the amount of choice just gives more room for "did I do the right thing"...

    regards
    Paul

That's where my £120 would be.

    Thanks for all your advice...

Would there be any reason to go for the 405, or am I going to get all I need from the 305?

How does the Panasonic DVD-XV10 compare - is this just designer gear vs good performance?

    Thx...

    Hi,

The 405 has extra features including MP3,VCD and DVDr playback. The 305 is a good player but the 405 is better well worth paying the extra few quid!!

Oh yeah it also has digital out which the 305 does not have.

    Cheers

    Dal

I think I'll go for the Toshiba 220 - one final question - will the child lock allow me to prevent my toddler from opening the disc tray (and trashing it)....thx

no, he can still press the button and swing from the tray :(

BTW, Toshiba SD220 is £99.99 at richer sounds (R2 only). Plays MP3, VCD and CDR.

please be aware that the 220 has probs with r2 of chicken run, so looks like a firmware upgrade is needed.Who knows what other titles dont work.

I can confirm that RS had v1.5 even 2 months ago when I purchased mine from them. If you ask them they will confirm it before you buy.
