Phoned a dealer to enquire if I can get blu-ray to work with my Barco and what he was saying sounded like it could be a bit dodgy with pic size etc I then asked about the jvc pj they sold and how it compared to my Barco and he said it would wipe the floor of my Barco and was much better (they used to sell Barco). What do you think?

I wouldnt mind getting a decent blu-ray player for my pj is it really a load of hassle and is it worth it?
Thanks
Dave

One more thought...You can use input 5 (RGBHV) if your BG808s accepts both positive and negative sync on input 5 as the players usually output positive sync.

Very much worth it ! You need the HDMI converter to output RGBHV analog.

Ive got a Duece SDQ upscaler, Sony dvd component out into scaler.
So just buy the HDfury and that plugs between pj and blu-ray, seems so easy and this will work and all images will fit ok? No other processing etc?
Sounds good :)

NTSC sould be fine but PAL can produce size issues.

Different rear and front porch settings for PAL.

Dave,
A couple of weeks ago I helped a customer with a Seleco 800 CRT upgrade his cinema to Blu-ray when he was faced with the same dilemma.

Our Blu-ray source was a Marantz BD8002 so money was not a major concern. His dealer also installed an Audiolab 8000AP processor to take care of HD audio decoding duties.

What I installed for him on the vision side was a s/h Lumagen scaler (Vision DVI) plus a HD Fury II. The Lumagen cost less than £200 and has a couple of HDCP compatible DVI inputs, 2x Component, 2x S-Video and 2x Composite inputs.

I know you have the Deuce. It was good at the time but things have moved on. With a projector as good as an 808 Graphics you really should be running custom resolutions and higher refresh rates. I set up the Lumagen to run Bluray and NTSC at 72Hz*, TV (Sky HD) his HD Cam at 75Hz, then some an NTSC video preset at 60Hz. The extra solidity from running a higher refresh rate makes the picture look rock solid and also helps reduce motion judder with NTSC film based DVDs. The 808G needs a scaler with a little more headroom - a Lumagen HDP or HDQ or similar from Anchor Bay would be a good match.

[*round figures]

The Lumagen also has additional tools to help with colour balance. After I'd done a bottom to top set-up of his projector, dialled in some custom resolutions to get the projector running sweet for each refresh rate, then colour balanced for each source we finally sat down to watch some stuff.

Roger was suitably floored by the picture quality from his HD sources. Casino Royal on Blu-ray looked absolutely stunning: stable, detailed yet smooth, and with a great colour palette. He was equally blown away by Sky HD. His point of comparison was the plasma with Sky HD in his other house in London. The projector image at his country house was miles better despite us standing five foot back from a 7ft wide image. Regular TV and DVD also benefitted from the makeover.

So, do you have to junk the 808 just to go HD? I'd say no.

This is the third HD CRT system I've set up in as many months (Lumagen + Barco 1208 in Derby, Lumagen + Barco 1209 in Wrexham, Lumagen + Seleco 800 in Sussex). All have been a job of work to do, but the end results have been well worth the effort.

Re the JVCs...I've calibrated JVC 350s and a 750 with Blu-ray, DVD and TV sources. They're good projectors for the money and incredibly quiet too. We all know about the colour management issues with the 350; it's one reason why the 750 was introduced. What is less well publicised is their limitations scaling TV and regular DVD. They really need the help of a scaler if you want to throw a variety of source material at them. You need to be looking at Lumagen HDQ or similar as a minimum.

Regards

I haven't used a scaler for some time now on my Bd 808. I just run the HDMI signal from the HD DVD/Blu ray player to the HD fury (model 1) into input 3.

You can try it first and see if works for you. You will also need a new DVI to HDMI adapter cable from the source to the projector if using the HD Fury one. The fury 2 uses a HDMI to HDMI cable.

The HD fury 2 also outputs component you can input directly to your existing scaler.

Thanks for the advice guys
Chris I thought the Deuce was a bit dated now (bought it about 6 years ago) and hasn't done a bad job, so thought if I changed to HD it would need to be updated, one more thing to add is I only watch dvd on the Barco dont know if this changes anything but might make it easier?
Im off to sunny Stoke today to pick up a dozen cinema seats to complete the cinema room I have so will be thinking hard about my dilemma:confused:
I really would love to convert to HD:)

Hi Dave,

My unbiased opinion ( I have JVC & CRT) if your 808 is a good un'? KEEP IT!

Did we meet some years ago when I used to work for Henry?

Also look at the FC4 as well as the Fury, several of us had Fury's(early type) and found it to be a smidge fussy! I also had a inbuilt card (moome) on my Marquee...late version too, and very, very tempermental, these are just my opinions from my own experiences.

Pal isn't a concern for our American cousins, but a real issue for us.FC4 never played any of us up. Whichever route you go, it's just a small cost to keep the fabulous beast you have already invested in.

It's been a long time since I have placed a post here, but would like to say hi, there are some great guys here who will look after you.

James is correct about the 1st gen HD Furys. 2nd Gen stuff is better, but like him I use the FC4. HD Fury is well known, so most folk understand what you mean when it is mentioned; a bit like calling any vacuum a Hoover or Dyson. HD Fury isn't the only game in town though; eg the FC4 or Greg Eisemann digital input cards.

Dave,
Whatever you watch - DVD, HD, TV etc - you really want the projector running at it's optimum resolution, and at a refresh rate that helps produce a stable image with clean motion. DVD done right on a CRT with a good scaler is something of a revelation for most folks. (Let's face it, just seeing their CRT set up right is a revelation for most folks too!! :rotfl:)

The point is that CRT display technology has been way ahead of what sources and processors of the time were capable of delivering for a long time. Now we have a great opportunity to partner those projectors with some really 1st class electronics and sources at very affordable prices. When I look at what CRTs are fetching now 808's under £500, 1209's for less than £1500 I think that if ever there was a golden age of CRT, then this is it!!

* Before I get flamed about Laser I'd better say that Yes, it can look great with the right transfer etc etc...the point is Laser is composite whereas DVD is component.

Hi James long time no see! Hope all is well for you, the pj is still going and I didn't adjust anything on the pj  after you sorted it for me for about 5 years. Had a bad year with cancer and the treatment has knocked me for six but looks like im winning so treating my cinema room as I should be around for a while to use it LOL. The Barco is still a good un' and I now have a spare set of boards as Ive just changed the splitter and had a good deal off Andy H:smashin:
Im going to wait until August if I 'upgrade' to HD as Ive just had an £1800 electric bill for 6 months :suicide:
I would like someone to do this for me as I just have no patience or proper know how and after all experience is everything ;) (Chris)

Dave

Hi Dave, I thought it was you, darned good to hear from you, and I am upset to hear the 808 has enjoyed a better health than you have, I trust you are well now and have the all clear?

I remember your room well, perched high above that Winnebago garage:) (very high above).

I have been down to Merthyr a few times in the last couple of years, customer there has 808 too.

Good idea to have spares Dave, it offers piece of mind, and glad you got a great deal on the boards.

Stay well sir.

J

Many thanks mate :smashin: I take it this little box accepts 48hz and 72hz refresh rates ok? and does it output RGB Video levels from the VGA socket?

Drop the guys at Media Factory a mail unless someone else has one and can say for sure. What resolution you going to run 72hz at?

Ok Chris i'll probably run 720p/71.93hz from my Lumagen HDP, does the Vision FC4 show Blacker than black in RGB mode? in other words does it output RGB video levels if that's what it's fed?
