I've just found out that the great saxophonist Barbara Thompson passed away a couple of months ago, aged 77. She had been suffering from Parkinson's disease for 25 years, yet still managed to play and write. I saw her play a few times, the first in around 1980, and the last in 2005. In case her name isn't familiar, her music might be - the theme to the South Bank Show featured her on flute, and she also wrote the Touch of Frost music (playing saxophone on that one). She has featured in a couple of BBC TV documentaries, both of which are linked to below. The first, Jazz, Rock and Marriage, was aired in 1979 on BBC1, and is about her life at that time married to rock drummer Jon Hiseman (who sadly passed away in 2018).
The second, aired in 2012 on BBC4, is also about her and Jon, but more about living with Parkinson's disease. I can thoroughly recommend that one to anyone who is either affected by the disease, or knows someone who is.
