Can someone please explain the benefits of balanced XLR interconnects? Is it necessary to have the same termination at either end etc etc.....

Benefits of balanced interconnects include superior interference rejection, especially with respect to grounding/mains,also improved ability to drive long lengths of interconnects without any of the above.

Downsides include price, relatively low number of cheaper amps with balanced inputs.

Worth noting is the number of high end manufacturers who DONT use balanced inputs, and still have good sound quality.
