Backing up dvds

Hi..

I plan to build a media centre for my dvds, family photo albums and internet use.. no gaming. I will be backing up to dvd+r and storing away.. also having a copy on media for tv watching.

At the moment im practicing backing up my dvd collection but arent sure if im going about it the best way.. my way of doing it .. ripping to HD using anydvd then shrinking and converting to iso on HD using clonedvd then finally burning to a dvd+r using imgburn, It plays fine and quality looks fine.. but then I have nothing to compare it with.
Im not a technical person... is there a better way of doing this?
I have google plenty and there doesnt seem to be a straight forward tutorial for it.

Can I ask why you would want to backup your DVD's? Surley the original is your backup?

As cost of storage is so cheap I personaly wouldn't bother trying to shrink the size by reducing the qualty. Whether you can tell the quality difference or not I'd save your time. So yeah AnyDVD is fine for ripping to HD. However if like me your fed up with the stupid adverts before you get to the main menu you could use clonedvd to rip the dvd to your hard drive without the adverts.

I have around 300 dvds and a small flat.. so not a lot of room left on the shelf.. I want to box them all up and store at my fathers in attic..

Is converting to ISO the best quality for HD and buring for dvds??

I'd recommend using MakeMKV to rip just the main film, best soundtrack and subtitles on to a hardrive and chuck the dvds up in the loft!!

I've got about 300 on a 1.5tb harddrive this way, and Mkv's are easy to get running in Win media center - just download a splitter (I use Haali) and you're good to go! The quality is fantastic as you are not doing any compression and with the falling prices of Hard Drives its a great solution.

You don't need to rip to HD first. Clonedvd works with Anydvd, so you can just go straight to the shrinking/converting. Also it will write straight to your DVDR (using the HDD as temporary storage).
So run Anydvd then run Clonedvd, put in your source DVD, tell Clonedvd the final size required and to save to your DVD writer. Click go, wait for the program to tell you to put in the DVDR, all done !!

I have been using IMGburn to build the TS files into a dvd as it says here How do I burn a video_ts (.bup and .ifo) folder to a watchable DVD? the problem I am having is that when it says calculate it constantly gets stuck at either 65% or 85%. when it does burn all the ts files the dvd will not play. Sorry for so many questions but I am new to this and so many people have different ways of doing it, I just want the best quality backed up and would like to know if this would be by burning an ISO file or finding a way of burning the TS files
