I have just replaced a Sony 940 AV receiver with a DB900, and in the process I also removed my VCR from the set up.

However, there is a marked background hiss coming from all the speakers, which is present even with the volume at 0, and does not change with turning the volume up. I didn't notice this yesterday, so I wonder if a setting on the receiver is responsible. Any advice accepted, thanks.

Take it back and get another one (see if you can try it in the shop). Sony have had similar problems with another of there amps (795 I think). It required 7 capaciters to be replaced.

After a couple of days, the hiss now appears to begin shortly after the AV is switched on, then peaks a half hour later and fades away to pretty quiet but not entirely absent after an hour or so. Feels like it warms up and the hiss then goes (mostly) away. I used to have an old Fiat that wasn't too good for an hour or so in the mornings. It fell apart. Will things go the same way here or maybe the Sony will get "run in"?

Thanks. I will return to the dealer armed with the thread on this issue from before. At least I am not suffering from some variant of tinnitus!!

I have returned the AV and come away with a Pioneer instead. The dealer told me that Sony told him they had sold over 10,000 AV receivers and only had 100 complaints of this problem. 1% - sounds like too many to me. Anyway, job done and thanks to Dfour and Ched. And Steve.Ex? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I was almost in the same situation, i paid for my Sony 795 and arranged to collect it from the store last weekend. After reading the thread last friday on the hissing problem, i got a refund and purchased a pioneer (VSX915), what model pioneer did you get in the end and what's your verdict (i am awaiting my Canton CD1's from Jake so haven't had a chance to try my amp out yet - can't wait!).

The very same, 915. Just set it up, very easy with the microphone thingy, and so far happy with it.
