I received my R4 copy of the Back to The Future Trilogy this morning and had a few minutes to check it out.

I tried the first disk, started the film, expected to be blown away by the soundtrack.

But I wasn't.. It was quiet and there was almost no bass!

I checked all my settings and they were all normal, but the only way I could get any reasonable bass was to increase the 'crossover' frequency on my Sub.

I switched over to the DTS track.. It was better, but not much.

In the end, I had to put on my DD demo disk, to be sure that there wasn't a fault on my kit.

I havn't spent long on this, so its possible that I am wrong, is anyone impressed with the soundtrack??

I might be watching the first one tonight and I suspect Squirrel and one or two others will too.

You will have my non expert verdict tomorrow;)

I am probably completely wrong.. But, in the old days when I had my first Dolby Surround hifi (Before Pro-Logic), I used to use my VHS copy of BTTF to 'demo' it.

I put on the DVD today expecting explosive bass and didn't get anything.

I even turned up the controls of my sub to abnomal levels, and nothing really happened.

Then I put in the 'Dolby Digital Demo' (With the settings on sub still increased) and nearly blew the house off of the foundations.

Maybe I am expecting too much.. After all, its an old film.. But I was expecting them to do something REALLY special with this release..

Let me know what you think

    Jon

Haven't had chance to try mine yet, but see the following extract from michaeldvd (a source I invariably trust):

Back To The Future is one of the movies we've all been waiting for. The wait has been worth it. This is an excellent DVD.

The video transfer is of reference quality.

    The audio quality is excellent.

The score sounds fantastic on it. Maybe you should just skip to the 360 surround helicopter bit after Marty comes back to 1985.

I am worried now.. Thats EXACTLY the scene that I went too.

There is the helecopter and then a crash and a bang as he comes back 'to the future'.. But it sounds c**p to me..

I think I will have to go and have another play.

Just had a quick listen, didn't play the helecopter scene, but the car park scene, and the bass seems fine to me.

I think when folk have had time to watch and listen to their copies then there will be some more feed back.

Should be watching one tonight, will post my findings tomorrow.

I have only ever seen these films on a mono TV. So I dont have any preconceived ideas about how good it should sound. I dont know whether that makes me a good or bad judge:confused:

Well, I think the soundtrack on disc 2 may be suffering from the warbles at certain points on the disc.

Player used: Pioneer dv-444, dolby digital audio selected.

Try listening to the music at times 7.03 and 7.37

I might have a duff disc hopefully, rather than a replication problem.... .

Can others try this and let me know? I 'll be doing the same by trying the disc on a 717 with a dts setup.

    Regards,

    TBXP

Watched the first one last night and it sounded good. Not spectacular and not demo material, but for a film of its age it was fine.

Concur exactly. It isn't loaded with LFE's throughout, but then it isn't that sort of film. It sounded better than I expected and better than the Laserdisc which it replaces in my collection.

I know I am going to sound like a halfwit (I know I usually do) But I dont know these films all that well, last night was proabably only the second time I have watched Back to the Future 1 and I was drinking. Thing is, I cant remember any helecopters in it:confused: and I certainly cant remember hearing anything the sounded like one.

You must've fallen asleep just before the end - where Marty has just returned to 1985, before the DeLorean breaks down again and he runs off to the Mall.

    Nigel

    Thanks for that:blush:

I will check it out today. There are dozens of films that I cant remember the end of due to being too drunk.

I have started avoiding stuff that is over 2 hours.

Exercising both usernames today Bri? :D

There was talk on other forums of people buying the R4, watching it until the R1 came out and then selling the R4 off on eBay  I don't know why they can't just wait for the R1 if that's the version they want... they waited all this time for BTTF, surely a few extra months won't hurt - can always watch it on VHS if they want to see it that badly after all

I totally agree! I wasn't expecting a thumping track like modern movies but I was a tad dissapointed. I haven't tried the DD track just the DTS. In the end I cranked up my sub but still very little LFE action.

Ah well still great films. Watched part 1 and half of part 2 so far loving every minute!

I was out yesturday and didn't have chance to post.. But I went home on Monday night and had another play.

I put in BTTF1 and still wasn't impressed.. But then I put in BTTF3 and heard what I expected.. When the car came back to the future (near the end on the train tracks over the bridge )I was greated with a large THUMP.. Just what I was expecting and hoping for.

I then put Disk1 back and confirmed (with the same settings) that there was hardly any LFE!

I definatly think that BTTF1 is quiet and has little bass and is not as impressive as I hoped for.
