Back to the future, as the 8pm premier? Is this a joke?

I'm hoping I've missed something here. Because I'm struggling to understand why a film made in 1985 is being shown at prime time on the "premier" channel.

1st showing in HD in the uk :smashin:

Does that really qualify as a premier? Especially when the premier channel has a SD simulcast, which the vast majority of subs will be watching.

Personally I think this is taking the ****! I hope this isn't going to be a regular occurence. Although I suspect it probably is :(

If the terrestrials can proclaim a premiere of a movie that's been shown on SKY for a year then I don't see anything wrong with the first HD broadcast of a movie also being called a Premiere and being on that specific channel for 7 days.

I reckon the subscribers are intelligent enough to not be confused and hey it's Back To The Future, certainly a very high end catalogue title:)

It is, every week there will be a UK first HD showing of an old film.

They have done it in the past, such as Titanic being the first film shown on Premiere HD, and Blade Runner being shown in HD for the first time.

I think it is building up to the 6 new HD channels.

Isn`t this the new Friday night "HD Premiere" ie a film that`s not been shown in HD before, with the proper premieres running on a weekly basis the rest of the time Saturday to Saturday. Thought it was quite a good idea myself, so long as the films are up to scratch.

taken from a post that was posted by Sky HD Team over on anther forum.

"Furthermore last week Sky Movies launched the HD Friday Premiere slot, which showcases modern greats premiering in HD in the UK for the first time. Upcoming highlights include Apollo 13, Back To The Future, X-Men, Unforgiven, Predator, Die Hard and Taxi Driver."

I understand the point about terrestrial channels proclaiming movies as "network premieres", but there are a few key differences. They aren't subscription channels. They are still generally relatively new films to many people who watch those channels, even if they have been on Sky for a year.

This could have been shown on one of the other HD channels. I think its stretching the definition of Premier and what most of Sky's customers would expect from the "Premier channels" somewhat.

Just very, very cheeky in my opinion. I had to go and check the guide when I saw the advert, because I was in disbelief they would do this.

I'm a HD subscriber and I'm still a little peeved. The vast majority of Sky's subs aren't on HD, can't imagine they will be very pleased to find the "premier" channel is showing a 23 year old film at prime time on Friday.

Its a good idea, just not on the Premier channel IMO. They have other HD channels they could show these "HD Premieres" on.

I just have a horrible feeling this is going to be the begining of a slippery slope. :(

One of my fav films and it looked awesome, would be happy to see all 3 on Premiere. We should stop moaning, we're getting 10 HD Channels now and the majority of new films on Prem are guff anyways

Enjoy

When I see excellent entertainment like this with such great picture quality, I congratulate myself for subscribing to SKYHD and even forget how pricey it is, for a while.More "proper" films like this please, SKY.:)

I'll meet you half way here:)
Yes for the HD movie viewers it has merit in having it on Premiere HD but for SD viewers it's pointless. The only thing I can think of is that SKY are putting highly desirable movies (both in broadcast and Blu-ray terms and only upto Nov 21st:) ) as a promotional tool aimed at SD viewers.

As a HD subscriber with movies then I don't ultimately care since the movie is being presented in HD, can't see a downside and for those SD only then well the Premiere and Genre lineup isn't that old and if value is a important then losing one premier slot a week is nothing compared to the Premiere channel already showing movies from the previous week, that would annoy me.

Totally enjoyed the movie but than again I already knew I would owning the trilogy boxset:)

The HD master overall was above average with far more detail and a more clear look than the DVD (as you would expect) considering it's a movie that has not had a full restoration for HD but did get a re-mastering for the DVD release and judging from the SKY HD broadcast I would say the same master was used for both DVD and HD, localised film damage was the same on the R1 and broadcast:)

I really don't see the problem here!

Sky are effectively using this as a promotional slot for HD. SD viewers will become more aware that not only new releases but classic are shown in HD.

And the "new" film that is not shown on a Friday evening is still shown 6 other nights during the week, so no-one will miss out.

It's a positive move in my opinion.
