I have an HTPC built around a Gigabyte B450 Aorus M, with a Ryzen 5, 2400G (Radeon Vega Graphics). It’s coupled via HDMI to an LG OLED65C9PLA. It handles 4k without breaking sweat, but the vast majority of my content is 1080p.
Everything worked great for 3 years. Ten days ago, the picture started to flicker. The screen would go black for about 3 seconds, then recover, as if losing sync. This would happen randomly every few minutes, or several times per minute.
I tried a new HDMI cable. This seemed to cure the problem, then after a couple of days (right after I threw out the old cable☹), the problem returned. Changed the display driver, but the problem persisted. I plugged in a laptop using the same cable – no flickering. Watching Live TV, or a USB stick – no flickering. Today I dug out an old DVI-HDMI cable and plugged that in (The B450 offers both outputs), and that works too. So it very much appears that the HDMI port on my motherboard is broken. Not the most obvious place for a failure to occur. Are there any diagnostic tools (hardware or software) I can use to confirm what’s going on?
I don’t think using DVI is a long term solution. It doesn’t support 4k, and currently the image is not fitting the screen properly, though maybe I can sort that with settings. Looks like I will need a new motherboard. What a pain in the a**e.
