I need a subwoofer for my room which is 4m x10m. It will be used 70/30 for music use.

I have heard and read good things about the following but I would appreciate some first hand opinions on the following:

    B&W Asw-675 - £650ih
    Velodyne Spl1000 - £950ish
    Velodyne Spl1200 - £1100 ish

If anyone knows where I can obtain better prices than I have found then links to them would be great.

I need a compact subwoofer with plenty of headroom hence the choices above - my budget is around £1000., less would be better though. My initial thoughts are the B&W cant be faulted for the performance/price/size/looks..........

    Regards,

    GJC

Other models worth considering, particularly for music use would be the REL Strata 3 £600, the REL Storm 3 £800, and the MJ Acoustics Reference 1 £700. all are very flexible and designed primarily for music use but will perform quite well for Home Cinema also.

Most of the magazines seem to agree with you as well. I seem to recall that Gonzo might know where they may be a bit cheaper but B&W don't allow the advertising of discounts.

I'm happy with my ASW 675 - it's in room about 6m by 4.5 - works excellently with both movies and music. Fairly compact as well.

    Hi Gjc
The asw675 is a great little sub well worth the money. Most B&W dealers will give discount if asked as Ian said i did get mine for 580 quid from Jonh kirk Hifi in beeston notts 10% off rrp. Also you
need to collect as B&W arnt mail order.
    Cheers Gonzo.

From what I've seen and read lately, the B&W has a lot to recommend it. Very promising sub.

I did hear a spl 1000 though only about 10 days ago, and really, it was quite astonishing what it could do.

As I'm considering the same sort of choice to find a compact sub, my intial thought is the spl on performance, not yet having heard the B&W. However, the B&W also looks nice and its perfomance has got to be relatively close. Hasn't it?

An option which is often overlooked in the compact sub market is Boston Acoustics. They make a sub called the PV1000 that I heard a year or so ago. My God, this thing is good possibly because, like Paradigm, Boston make all thier own drive units. More info here
