B&W 685 or Mordaunt Short Mezzo 2???

Hi everyone - first post on here :)

I'm looking for some new bookshelf speakers up to around £400 and have so far narrowed it down to either B&W 685 or Mordaunt Short Mezzo 2

I'm going to go and have a listen to the MS this weekend.

Does anyone have any experience with either speaker?

Will be used for music only (not watching movies) in my 2nd lounge, and also for my DJ setup alongside my Pioneer CDJ1000's.

Thanks

Hi, Welcome to the forums. I only listened to the 685 briefly at a friends house and IMO are excellent apeakers. Plenty of low end and sound stage. There are numerous reviews if you google.

In the end went for the Mezzo 2's as I got a good deal combined with my amp (CA 640A v2) and liked the overall sound and the appearance.

However, I would advise you to audition both speakers extensively. I picked up the Mezzo's for £299, the 685's are rarely discounted and cost circa £370.

Best of luck.

Cheers

obviously listening to tham as you will do is all you need to do. However, I did audition both those and bought the 685s, no brainer really.

However, for that money, whilst I didn't get a chance to audition any, I was recommended by several experienced people, to take a look at the Focal 706s supposed to be awsome too.

Focal J M Lab Chorus 706 V (Pair) - £389.00 : Audio Destination, Devon's Audio Specialist

Even as a Mezzo 2 owner, I wouldn't disagree with your general conclusion not sure however if it's a "no brainer". Dont forget the RRP of the Mezzo's is £450. And of course as we both agree you must audition.

I do however agree the 685 is a 'class' speaker but may not suit all tastes and amps particularly if you can get a good deal with the amp.

I too have not heard the Focal 706's so can't comment how awesome they may or may not be to the OP.

Cheers

I have auditioned both speakers and have decided to purchase the B&W. However it is a subjective matter, I simply prefer the smoother, fuller delivery of the 685's (and HTM61) to other makes. I auditioned the M&K 750 and found them too forward for my ears so I'm probably a bit of an anomaly. :)

I opted for a set of 685's in the end. £370 on Superfi's website however ended up being charged £349.99 when I picked them up so the same as what I'd have paid for the MS'.

I'm chuffed to bits with them and they are certainly on par with the Focal Utopia front end I used to have installed in my car.

Next step will be a new amp and bi-amping them in a month or so.

Thanks for all of your comments :)

Good on you mate, if I may suggest, try and audition with amps you short-list.

All the best

I can't give any information or comparison on the 685's as I've yet to hear any.

I have got some mezzo 2's though and they are fantastic, the detail the tweeter puts out is astounding. And the sound they give out is very good for such a small speaker, I even find it to be a more refined sound that my RS6's!

I am building a 5.1 mezzo setup at the moment from 4 mezzo 2's and a 5. Can't comment yet though as I'm still waiting on some cables.:(

Mezzo's are highly reccomended though.

One other thing: I think a lot of people have jumped on the B&W's because of WHF. But it may be of note that originally both the 685's and Mezzo 2's got 5 stars and were both rated fairly even, the 685's only winning because at the time they were £80 cheaper than the mezzo's.

So really they are both excellent choices and you will not be dissapointed. But do have a listen!

I am very happy with the Mezzo's I think they offer good bass and yes that tweeter is excellent. The RRP is £450 I picked mine up for £299.

In terms of cable I use CA Symphony 300 @ £1.49 per metre from RS - nice thick copper.

The 685's are also fine speakers and yes WHF do love them but they are good. As you say, listen to both if possible.

Pleased your happy with them.

i heard some 685s today and really not impressed at all, went for the monitor audio BR2s because they sound that bit clearer and crisp-er and £140 less !!!

Did you audition the Mezzo's. Only £70 more than the BR2's but you have acquired good speakers albeit a fair bit smaller than the Mezzo's.

didnt manage the audition the mezzos, i only found them at richer sound who are, in my opinion, a bit useless.

what do you mean smaller than the mezzos?
they have same size drivers and cabinet are about the same too

The drivers are both 6.5" but the cabinets are smaller. Personally, I would not describe RS as useless. My local branch is very helpful. Perhaps they were having a bad day.

Sorry for hijacking the thread but as there are lot of Mezzo 2 owners on here I thought I would seek some advice.

Does anyone have good recommendations for stands that would go well with the speakers?

Also, I'm using them as the front pair in a home cinema set up with the sides, rears, centre and sub taken care of by the much smaller alumni range paired with an Onkyo amp. Am I doing them a disservice with this pairing?

Cheers

Would the Mezzo 1s be a good option to go with the pioneer xc-p01dab? I want a new stereo and I was looking at the Denon DM39 and then saw the Pioneer which might be better. I then need to make a choice on speakers and saw some Mezzo 1s on offer. Would I be better with those or something else?
