In most cases, i've to turn the volume until -10 db, so the sound make it loud. is this normal.

I've had a yamaha and listen at -35 db.

Yes apparently it is, I got the ax5i just before christmas and have to turn the volume up to -15db. Previously i had an sony 555es and the volume at -30db. I checked with my dealer and it is something to do with the way THX receivers are calibrated, they can run for extended periods at 0db with no trouble.

I usually have the AX5 set at -30 for Sky, somewhere around -20 for movies and up to -16 for music.
Anything louder than that and it's almost too painful to listen...

I've got a 2011, the ancient ancester of the AX5i and at -10 on any other source but DVD the sound would be way, way too loud - and I like loud. Sounds like somethings up.

Have you run the MCACC auto setup?

I ran my 2011 at 0dB, only had to turn it down for 1 movie (R1 Underworld to -5dB).

If you can sit and listen to your amp at 0dB then I would recommend getting your ears syringed as they must be seriously bunged up...

I'll jump in and say I'm with the majority,

    -50 is comfy background music
-35ish is normal TV from Sky

I had T3 at -17 from DVD t'other night, but we had lots of people in the room.

What is odd is that Sky Movies, especially DD needs cranking right up to -10 for the equivalent say -20 from DVD source.

On my AX-3 Between -30dB and -20dB is normal for TV watching, for DVDs I tend to run it between -20dB and -10dB. As someone mentioned earlier THX amps are designed to run at 0dB for reference levels and this should do no harm to the amp.

I do wonder what 0db would do to my speakers / ears though, but they aren't THX ;)

    I usually play DVD´s on my Ax-5i at - 8db , it´s loud but it doesn´t hurt my ears.
sounds lovely with my KEF Cresta´s and Paradigm Ps-1200 sub.

    Brogan,

Interesting to see your volume settings. Mine seem to be the reverse of yours, my Sky -15 and music between -30/-25. How are you connecting your Sky box and pio 868 to the amp. I’m using RCA for Sky and iLink for my 868.

    Paul,

Whats your connection method for Sky and what DVD player are you using.

Sky is via optical and the 868 is via iLINK and phono.
I do have the Sky volume turned up in the menu setting to about 3/4 though so perhaps that accounts for it?
As for music, -30 is perfectly comfortable but if I'm in the mood I'll dial it up a bit. I don't always listen at -16, especially not in the evenings - that's just the maximum volume I would listen at.

    Cheers Brogan,

Just seen your sig, didn't realise you had Sky+ I assume thats why there is such a big difference in our Sky settings.

I just replaced my Yamaha with AX5i and the volume seems awfully quiet.

At -30db there's no sound, -20db is barely a whisper
On the yamaha at -30db it shook the house down

I find with the pioneer 0db is a comfortable level and I can turn it all the way up to +12db without it still getting too loud????????????

It makes the midnight and loudness modes virtually useless as it's far too quiet at that volume to hear anything

Maybe I'll do a factory reset and see if that solves the problem, unless anyone has any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Richard

I think I replied to this thread yonks ago, but since then I've got myself an 868 and with iLink I have to crank the volume up another 10db or so. To recap

    Sky+ :

    -50 = background
    -35 = "normal"
    -30 = 24 :)
-20 = Sky Movies Dolby Digital (always much quieter for some reason)

Knock a couple more off if munching crisps.

iLink is usually around -15 for a nice level of loudness.

I listen to movies at around -33dB on my Yamaha RX-V2500 (dynamic range set to max).

Even taking into account differences in sensitivity between speakers, differences in room size and speaker distance, and speaker level adjustments (which range no lower than -10dB on this amp), I still find it hard to think I would listen to the same amp at 0dB in another setup.

Well I tried a factory reset and used MCACC to set it up again
    Exactly the same result

There's absolutely no sound at -50,-40 db, getting up to -30db you can start hearing and at -20db is a whisper.
0db would be normal listening and +12db (which is the loudest the amp will go to), I would consider loud. But even at that volume it's not extremely loud

Is there a setting on the AX5i which may be causing this? Or is it possible I've set speakers up incorrectly?
As I said, at -30db on my yamaha the sound is loud enough to shake the walls down. And I can't even get that AX5i at 12db to go as loud as that
    :lease:

Just rescanned the thread and it seems no one has asked you what speakers you are running.

So - what speakers have you got?

I'm just wondering if this might be an impedance issue?

(he says going off to remind himself about such things :) )

I think i'm right in saying that 0 is 75db on a THX amp ?

I'm probably going to get shouted at a lot and told i'm wrong :) but if that is the case then -30 is like 45db? If so then I can hear a lot at around that volume on my setup.

It does sound a bit weird that you can't hear a thing... maybe get your ears syringed :) or umm err... I don't know :) In fact don't know why i've invaded your thread....

Slinks off to hide under a piece of stone....

    Steff

    PS: Yipeeeeeeeee it's Friday!!

I've a AX5i and i have to say the difference between -30db and -15db is massive, you should be rocking your house approching 0db on it, really.

Can i suggest you go back to basics (if you haven't already, or maybe you are doing this.)

    CD / DVD player
    AMP
    2 speakers

Hope this doesn't sound condescending i'm not meaning it to be at all.

    Factory reset the amp
Make sure there are good connections between CD / DVD & Amp.
Make sure speakers connections are + to +, - to - and no stray wires are shorting it.
Ideally have a second set of speakers to test as well.
    Ignore the whole MCACC set-up
    Play CD or a DVD.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
They're Accusound 8ohm speakers (I've checked the amp and it's set correctly to 8ohm position)
I've tried the factory reset and even without making any changes, the volume is about the same
(ie at +12db it's loud, but there's no distortion in the speakers at all and I could get it a lot louder on my Yamaha, where at -25db, it was almost too loud to listen to)
We've checked the speaker wires (even done the THX polarity check to confirm this).
I guess I'll just do as oconnpad suggested.
I'll take all the connections off and set it back to basics, with just front stereo speakers and DVD connection.
Will see how that goes :hiya:

    OK,
I've taken everything off the back of the amp.
I then just attached ONLY the left and right front speakers.
So there's absolutely nothing else attached to the amp.
I then did a factory reset.
Since I don't have anything attached, I've switched in to the Tuner.
Obviously, all I get is static - but I can still turn the volume up to +12db - and although loud, it's not that loud that I can't listen to it. The speakers aren't being overdriven as there's no distortion.
I then went it changed it over for another pair of 8 ohm speakers I had in the front room - and the same result.
I just can't get good volume out of it.
Unless anyone else has another suggestion, I'll ring up Pioneer on Monday and if they still can't help I'll take it back to the dealer and ask them to check it out for themselves
    :(
