Having a bit of a nightmare with my brand new AX5i... It replaced a Yam 3090 and is now connected to:
    DV646A
    B&W CC6/603/602
    REL Q50
QED silv anniv (biwire at front).

When initially set up it sounded really harsh compared to the Yam. Too much treble, and you really want to turn it down. Some sibilance too.

Then I did the MCACC thing and it made it much much worse! It cut low-mid frequencies, making it sound like a tranny radio, with sibilance! A complete joke really.

I got the Sheffield labs disk out (and trusty old SPL meter) and plotted the following.

    ---see plot on lower post----

This thing is miles worse than the 7 year old Yam. I just am not sure whether this product is faulty, or just very poor. I have to say that the overpowering treble is very clear (and piercing) even at low vol!

    Any inspiration, anyone?

Also - I keep getting small shocks off the front - you get the usual wierd feeling when you rub your finger on it, but this is more than a little tingle. In fact my multimeter shows 110v AC!

If you're getting shocks off it then maybe it's buggered! Certainly sounds the case if it's 110v pings you're getting!!

I'd get it replaced just for that reason.

Just plugged the Yam in and it sounds so smooooth! I did a quick freq response, but it doesn't tell the whole story by any means.

Well that was an expensive mistake!

The Pioneer sound, particularly after running MCACC tends to be neutral and lacking the warmth (mid-bass boost) found in many receivers.

You shouldn't be getting shocks. My 2011 feels very nice indeed, great finish. I would return it if you are reading a voltage on the casing.

I'm taking it back to the dealer tomorrow morning - clearly the MCACC isn't working (a 10db cut in mid bass sounds dreadful!)

    Let's hope!

Replaced it with a 3803 this morning - what a huge difference! Much better than the 3090 and clearly the AX5i was either faulty or a complete rip off.
