    Hi Scooby,

I would look at the Cyrus Range of amps the new 8vs sounds interesting and for £800 is not bad either.
There is also the Roksan Caspian range which is very nice and it is around that price range too.
I am sure there will be other suggestions made but thought i'd give you a couple to think about, but i would make sure u demo the equipment aswell.

    John :)

Well on the power amp side Im selling my Musical fidelity XA200 200w monoblocs at the moment. Power amps dont get any better at the price, and theyre well within your budget

You should be able to get the A3cr pre and A3cr power amps for less than £500 each, used.

    Also look at:

    Primare 20.1/30.1 Integrated
    Roksan Caspian Integrated
    MF A3.2 Integrated
    Rotel 1062 Pre/Power

With some luck you may be able to get an ex-dem or secondhand Primare PRE30 / A30.2 combo for about £1,200. These would blow MF amps for example out of the water.

In what way would they better the MF? Have you heard them both?

Why don't you try a pair of Flying Mole digital power amps from TMF , should be in the power buy section of the forums. They are truely remarkable for the money and really should be auditioned. Pair these with a reasonable preamp (or better still a Home Theater PC and decent sound card) and you should be all set.

I had a pair on loan a few weeks back but haven't got around to a proper review yet as I've been out of the country, but I can say these amps did really well for the money.

In fact, it now seems that you might be able to get the A3.2 pre & power amps for £550 each! Dealers seem to be selling-off excess 3.2 stock due to the imminent arrival of a new MF range.

Or of course, you could still get the A3cr gear. Even less now: £400 each if you shop around. Absolute bargain at that price, and a little more tastefully designed than those enormous, shiny silver 3.2 amps :( .

Designed for US market, methinks. Bigger = better over there........

Why not try a second hand Krell 300i - very impressive integrated amplifier. Can be found around the £1k mark

    Hi,

my comment on Primare vs. MF was based on some detailed listening comparisons I did; I went to one of the major dealers in London with the intention of walking out with an MF X-Ray + the pre-/power-combo as they were about 5 years aho (can't remember the exact model numbers off the top of my head).

I was bitterly disappointed by the MF amps; as much as I wanted to buy them, they just sounded rubbish into my speakers (Jamo Concert 8). I was about to walk - depressed - out of the shop when I was persuaded to listen to a Primare A30.1 (roughly the same price as the MF combo); this was in a different league and I ended up buying the A30.1. I have recently upgraded to a Primare PRE30 / A30.2; this is a big step up over the A30.1 (and ended up costing me the same as what I paid for the A30.1).

I haven't heard any MF amps for a couple of years; maybe they are now miracuolously better. I still think the MF stuff looks nice, I'd have bought it is it had sounded ok.

All the above IMHO of course.

Also worth looking for Sugden or Unison.

If your handy with a soldering iron, there is a huge amount of valve kits which would really give you a taste of the high end
