    Hi
just spotted a First Test of the AVR300 in What Hifi- June04 edition.
They reckon it's on a par with the best of the competition for movies, but much better than anyone else for music.

    Regards

Music playback with Stereo Direct mode (i.e. DSP shut off) is quite impressive. I hardly ever played music with my AVR200 (being too spoiled with my seperate Alpha10/Linn Sondek system), but now that I have an AVR300 I find my self throwing CDs into the DV88+ when I work at home.

But cinema playback is also impressive. The initial canon attack scene in Master and Commander with the AVR300 in 7.1 is pretty amazing.

    I'm really glad I did this trade-up.

Even the wife is impressed, and she usually doesn't take much notice (generally states she can't hear the difference...not true now).

Can anyone make a comparison between the AVR300 and any other Arcam Diva amplifiers to see which it most closely resembles for music i.e. A65, A80 etc? Anyone know what Arcam are claiming regarding this?

The review says its as good as any surround reciever and as good as the A65 for stereo.

JD said it is not dissimilar to the A80/90 ( or words to that effect ).

The Advertising bumf says its design is based on the AV8, which is better than any reciever for prossesing IMO.

So make of it, what you will.

    Conffused......i am...:zonked: :zonked:

Glad now i just went for the A90, as it was starting to give me a headache, trying to decide.
All the above just makes it worse.

Yes, I too was trying to decide how good it was in stereo but I ended up buying a 2nd hand A32 anyway. At a guess I'm assuming the (soon to have?) AV300 will be great for bi-amping with my A32.....

    Hi cameron.

I am thinking of getting one to go with my A22 ... one thing i'm thinking about that is an annoyance is the that I have a Marantz 5300 and the off/on button works both.. I guess the same would apply with the AVR300. So when you want to spend an evening listening to cd's just on the stereo amp you can't just "turn off" the surround amp because it turns off both. Oh Volume works on both as well... same I guess would apply with the AVR300... Only little things but they do add up to be darn annoying over time.

    Steff

... who can't decide between an AVR300 or a Rotel RSP1068 and RMB 985 MK II for all other channels :)

    Dean,

How does it compare with your Alpha 10? I've currently got a 10/DAVE and 10P3 setup and may consider going to an AVR300 at some point in the future.

    Cheers,
    Liam

The two systems are in different rooms. The Alpha 10 has a Linn Sondek LP 12 as source and 2 Linn Sara speakers. The AVR300 has a DV88+ for source and 8 Dynaudio Audience speakers. Too many variables to make any valid conclusions.

I can't make that comparison and know why one or the other sounds better (although I'll bet my Linn Sondek will beat the pants off any CD player anyway).

For those of you anxious to read the AVR300 first review in the current issue of What Hi-Fi?, it is now available as a PDF on the Arcam UK website at http://www.arcam.co.uk/downloads/whfavr300.pdf

I believe reviews from other UK magazines are in the pipeline.

Most UK and US dealers should now have the AVR300 available for demo. Other countries will have it very soon - please check with your national distributor if you are not sure.
