Anyone heard these two back to back ?

I know the A1SRA is the bigger, beefier machine complete with THX Ultra certification, but it is the older model, and the 3805 gets very good reviews

I've done the comparison thingy on the website and apart from 4 more power supplies and the THX, there doesn't seem to be much in it. I know the THX certification is a mark of quality, but I understand it also costs a small fortune to obtain - hence part of me assumes that Denon or whoever might just not want to give LucasArts all that money

There's no comparison. The A1SRA is FAR superior in every dept. It was their Flagship amp until very recently. It has a finer Pre-Amp section, much better DAC's, superior amplification, power supplies etc etc. In terms of how it sounds, you get more detail, better surround steering, depth to the soundstage and it's more dynamic.
