Hi there!

I'm not even sure if this is the right location to start my thread

I'm trying to determine the "best" video format to play on a PS3 in terms of overall quality and file compression (i.e. not taking too much disk space escpecially on a portable hard disk)

would you go for AVI or MP4?

MP4 I believe has better compression, eg H264 (what Apple use)

Also MP4 allows you to put metadata embedded in the file for your devices.

MP4 is definitely the way to go as this is H264. AVI is a much older format - normally in DIVX or XVID.

Would better compression equals better quality "in general" as well?
