Sounds like 4K/HLG might be ready for the masses for the Euros 2020 which is good... Will help with all of the white clipping that is prevelant in current broadcasts... I'd imagine that 1080p/HLG would have been easier and more useful as a trial, but 4K is key to marketing...

Hopefully there will be reasonable cost processors to map HLG to HDR so people can take advantage of projectors that are able to receive an HDR signal...

@Ed Selley It’s possible the “Cowboy” is from the shot made of butterscotch schnapps and baileys. In Australia, it’s called the C*cksucking Cowboy.
....and because you mentioned drinking games, when listening to the AVForums podcast, I play the “I gotta say” drinking game....I’m on the waiting list for a new liver.

      Great podcast again!

Star Wars. Netflix have made a habit of making 10 hour movies. Altered carbon, lost in space ect. Star Wars need to go down that route, along side a couple of stand alone movies along the lines of rogue one.

I have to agree on the Flicker with Black frame insertion on the FZ952, I can see it instantly and it looks awful so I can't leave it on.

easy to be wowed by the bbc uhd world cup test when there HD broadcast looks like total dogsh*t.

fast forward a few years when the 4k bitrate is starved and uhd looks like sh*t compared to 8k.

It has already looked that bad during this trial. As soon as they try to cut the bitrate and compression it looks terrible.

BBc HD is infinitely better than ITV Hd though.

      presentation yes, but PQ no.

compare the wide angle view player detail, bbc image quality is softer than that on itv, both still garbage though but 1 is slightly less sh*t than the other :)

Great show as always, my dudes.

Regarding World Cup commentary options, the ultimate bliss (particularly as a Scottish viewer) is the BBC option for no commentary. Just the match sounds, without the clankingly obvious and dull voiceover. It also just shows a highlight reel at half time instead of the tedium of Alan Shearer’s tactical “analysis”.

the bbc should go back to 1440x1080, at least then the pitifull bitrate might stand a chance of delivering a better image.

Star Wars is pretty much over considering the best film was made in 1980...... They are now losing money and have pretty much disenfranchised the people who made it the huge success it used to be.....it's about as toxic as a brand can be now........possibly the biggest b#/#!/k drop in the history of film.....

Great podcast as usual. Grass pollen season is due to end sometime next week here in the south. Sorry Phil but in the north, it's set to continue into mid or late July: Pollen forecast - University of Worcester

Regarding Star Wars. This interesting video is trending on YouTube this morning:

Really? The merchandise is fuelled by the films still coming out. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings merchandise is barely seen.

      And

The Last Jedi is the 10th highest-grossing film ever

Solo I'm talking about...which is losing money and the merch is ending up in the bargain basement.

LOTR and HP ended years ago and so are hardly fair comparisons, however having gone to Orlando and LA the last 2 years universal are absolutely coining it in the Harry Potter element of the theme parks, including the merch..

Its a sign of a downward trend, first star stars movie to lose money and it is the most recent film.

They may pull it back who knows. But TLJ and the fan response to it has been huge.....

When you alienate and put down your core fan base you are taking a huge risk

Personally I could care less either way

Solo was a backstory film, not a big deal in the franchise and with characters with plot armour and had so-so reviews. It also opened against some other films like Infinity War and the latest Jurassic Park.
Most liked it, some didn't. I was amused that after a backlash of those hating it there was a counter backlash against that. If it comes to it The Phantom Menace was dire and that didn't kill the franchise. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a Bond film and that still makes money and I'd still watch the next one.

Regardless TLJ was still one of the biggest grossing films ever.

I didn't mind solo pretty much by the numbers but a fun watch all the same....

Thanks again folks - my first go to podcast every Monday.

Can you ask your contacts why Panasonic etc persist without DV? Licensing?

It will be interesting to see how the situation will improve when they provide 8k broadcasts at the Japan Olympics in 2020. What is the minimum download speed required?

Understand/agree with the re-branding for the Bristol Show. Can anyone recommend a decent AV show?

I have been very impressed with the BBC iPLAYER [HDR HLG, UHD] broadcast of the World Cup. But only after the App update of BBC iPLAYER to address the buffering issues on my LG OLED C7.
I am guessing this specific App update has not reached many other TV’s.

The latest LG OLED firmware states:
"Fix the buffering issue in BBC iPlayer 4K Dash Live stream’

Just wondering if there is any way of knowing for sure if the iplayer beta is giving you the 4k stream or the 1080 upsampled? on a 40" screen its not the easiest to tell (and without being able to do a side by side comparison)

None of the "info " buttons on my Samsung remote say anything useful in the iplayer app
