Thank you chaps for another top notch year of AV. Merry Christmas
I've missed many many podcasts so am playing catchup at this point. To add to the poddy content, my picks for the year...

Favourite AV products of the year...
I only bought one AV product, the UB900 - it's been quite good thus far. An Oppo might replace it in time though.

      Albums of the year
I bought very little music, but a tedious link would be film soundtracks; The Neon Demon being one corker of a soundtrack.

      Games of the year

Uncharted 4 & F1 2016. The former was outstanding and IMO level pegging with The Last of Us. The latter was just a well made, authentic, layered, fun racer. Still a bit glitchy, but the best F1 game to date. Battlefield 1 is on the to buy list. For years and years, the CoD community got more and more fed up with the Sci-Fi direction that Activision were going on, so it's a breath of fresh air to do something different, kudos to EA for that one.

      Favourite films of the year
Covered below...I didn't really get to the cinema this year, so...disc releases of some 2015 films, technically.

      Favourite Blu-rays of the year

I bought more UHD discs than 1080p discs, but from the 'old' tech, I liked:
The Neon Demon - NWR, marmite as always, but visually, what a film.
Spectre - Good disc, meh flick
Sicario - Covered in my UHD waffle below.
The Walk 3D - To book end the 3D format, this or Everest - excellent.
      Everest 3D - As above.
To Live and Die in LA - mentioned in the poddy, the new releases of older, niche films that have had proper remasters, brilliant.

Favourite Ultra HD Blu-rays of the year

The Shallows - Short, sharp, to the point. Gravity at sea. Looks and sounds fantastic.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - Not perfect across the board, but some scenes are like nothing else. If all back catalogue films would be given the same amount of attention. The Atmos mix didn't add a lot IMO.
Deadpool - As mentioned in the poddy. Perfect.
      The Revenant - Ditto
      Sicario -
A brilliant film, a brilliant disc. The combination of the director & DoP should mean The Arrival will be a very special UHD disc.
Independance Day - My first Dts:X disc - it looked and sounded awesome, and remains one of my favourite films from my childhood.

Unfortunately whilst the video quality on Jason Bourne is very good in places, there's a lip sync issue on the disc that gets worse as the film progresses; it's like a Hong Kong martial arts dubbing knockoff most of the time.

Favourite TV shows of the year

Just the two; Planet Earth II and West World. Still not finished the latter, I'm waiting for a disc release so I can binge watch it. The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones etc are still on the to do list.

Rogue One...I might go and see over the Christmas break, although I'm working the whole way through so that'll be a struggle, and I have a Lego Porsche to build. Life goals and all that...

      Onto 2017, stuff to expect:
      • Well authored 4K in-car footage from a noisy 200mph+ Corvette.
      • A turntable purchase.
      • A TV purchase (the Epson needs a break).
Special mention for Ed's vlogging of how to destroy something beautiful recently, very good .

Thanks for the podcasts throughout the year lads, they keep me informed/amused while on my Monday morning run to work.

Really looking forward to your CES coverage and while it sounds like more refined changes, I'm really hoping I don't have to wait another year as I'm itching to jump to OLED. Hoping with Panasonic/Sony joining the OLED party, prices will be slightly more competitive.

@Phil Hinton , how is the Yamaha RX-A3060 treating you, I know you have been testing, but its been quiet on the podcasts with the Denon getting more of a mention from Steve, will we hear the AVF opinion this year or will it be post CES?

Have a great jolly in CES, your talk of 15 hrs days in cramped press/hotel rooms doesn't fool me - while hard work, it must be a bit like Christmas!!

Looking forward to this end of year podcast, once I can download it on iTunes. Had to resubscribe to the podcast and close down iTunes to get it to download. Don't know if there's a problem at your end as podcasts from other sources have downloaded this morning without any issues.

Just wanted to say many thanks to all the team including the back office, for the great production over the year(s). You are my first " go to " website/podcast for av articles and reviews and I always recommend you to people ( including a few av salesmen in certain stores! ) when chatting about AV issues.

Enjoy CES and don't forget the age old adage - " What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas! " Be gentle with Ed!

Great podcast again folks. Always look forward to the weekly updates. Keep up the great work, it is much appreciated.

Mark - as fellow Rez fan from the Dreamcast days, I bought the PSVR mainly in the hope that it would deliver on the promise of the definitive version, and without a doubt it has never been better. It is fantastic and crank the sounds up and you are in 'that' world. Just buy it :)

      Great end of year podcast

My favourite one I listen to every week without fail

I Saw R1 in 3D Imax and really enjoyed it. I was worried about the lead actress as she was awful in the only other film I'd seen her in but was great in this.

Best AV product of the year..I haven't got one but that Hisense 65 inch 4k hdr tv for £700 sounds like a winner

GOTY. Uncharted 4. Doom and pes 2017

Best film Deadpool great fun and better huge change from the usual marvel stuff which is getting old

      Most overrated....Arrival

Huge pile of streaming. +#!* independence day 2.

Best tv..binge watched walking dead, GOT and Westworld and planet earth 2

      Razor Snakes......eeeeeeeeeek!

We now record at 10 in the morning. Now, I like to think that few people have the same devotion to the... 'craft'... that I do but even so, being three sheets to the wind at 10am is something I thought I'd wait until at least my forties before undertaking.

Great podcast. When you talk to the LG reps could you ask them if the 2016 Oleds will get a firmware update for HLG?

I think the only thing more sad than having social drinks over skype, would be to have them at 10am. Saying that, its always evening somewhere...

Enjoyed the year end podcast. Thanks for all your work this year, folks. To be honest the world of AV isn't really top of my list at the moment, but i've thoroughly enjoyed each podcast and feel pretty well informed.

In terms of TV this year, of the small amount i've seen, my favourites were Deutschland 82 and Line of Duty. To my surprise i also really enjoyed War & Peace as well.

Wish you all a Merry Christmas and i'm looking forward to the CES coverage.

Thanks for all the enjoyable podcasts this year (and I really think Withers and Selley should get a room ;)). Off the top of my head...

      TV series I liked:

      Westworld
      Stranger Things
      Walking Dead
      Game of Thrones

Cinema I liked (i'm sure i've seen more but can't remember - seeing Rogue One on Friday):

      Arrival

Trolls <- anyone who didn't see this, it comes highly recommended, especially for young kids/girls/tweens - it contains great music and dance numbers (co-written by Justin Timberlake who also voiced main character) and excellent characters and 3D, much better than I expected it to be - my favourite 3D animation of the year. I have never been to a cinema viewing before where the tween girls were up out of their seats and dancing in the aisles/back of cinema to a movie (and we could see this because unfortunately the idiots in cinema left the lights on for entire movie!)

Have to agree with the team on the Rogue One 3d. I am a massive fan of 3D but thought it was unnecessary and added very little to the film, it will be interesting to how it looks on my projector and TV, as it looked soft and not properly focused at the cinema.

Yeah cheers chaps for the combination of info and humour throughout the year

And also for taking the issues of spoilers so seriously - well done!

Most of the kit you discussed is out of my current disposable income - and having moved away from the UK, probably all the more so - but some of the info will be retained in a small part of the brain known as Shatner's Bassoon - at least until the next binge-drink session clears it.

In many ways you could say, 'So long and thanks for all the pish' ;)

      @Ed Selley

      Digging up the thread.

Tidal is offering "master" (allegedly 96 kHz / 24 bit) quality albums for the HiFi tier. Sturgill Simpson's - A Sailors Guide To Earth.

      Desktop only for now.
