Which mode would you recommend I don't seem to be able to hear too much difference between DD EX and using the ultra THX modes etc?

All sound very good with my speaker combination and nice flat response of the Velodyne DD15 combined with my Canton karats.

What are the advantages of each mode and when should I use them?

If you have a 7.1 setup then Dolby PLIIx is probably the best mode as it gives you Stereo Surround Backs and works with both 2ch Stereo and Dolby/DTS 5.1 tracks. THX Ultra2 Cine is also pretty good when overlaid on a Dolby/DTS 5.1 track as it gives you pseudo Stereo Surround Backs. Dolby EX or THX Surround EX also work well but you don't get Stereo Surround Backs, just a mono signal split between the two speakers.

A lot of it is down to personal taste though so you're best to just experiment and choose which you prefer.
