I am looking for something which is possibly on offer??

I need it to power my current setup:
    Eltax 400 front
    Wharfedale Diamond 8+ centre
    Wharfedale DFS-18 rear
And i've just bout a Velodyne CHT-10 which is why i only have £170 to spend!

The Denon Avr-1705 is the one i was looking at but they can't get stock for a while so i'm not sure. Should i hold out for stock?

    Thanx

Why don't you keep an eye out on the classified section, as loads of decent amps come up for cheap. You could even put a thread up asking for one.

£170 wont get you much to be honest. If you can seve up just another £40 ish you will get a decent amp. According to another member, you can get the Pioneer 814 for as little as £208 from Empire Direct (in a sale).

Unless of course you do go second hand.

The VSX-D814 is £199 but is the VSX-D514 any good?

How is the VSX-D814 compared to the Denon AVR-1705?

Is the VSX-D814 good for music?

    Cheers.

At the £200 mark, I do not believe any receiver is good for music. You will get some better than others, but you would need to move a segment or two up to find a truly musical receiver, and even then, most still aren't that good.

The Denon may well be the closest at the £200 mark, unless you can find an end of the line Marantz SR4400 somewhere.

I think going 2nd hand will bring the biggest benefit, £200 will buy you a decent receiver in the classifieds here.

Its al relative though, it will certainly be better than most (any) mini/midi system at the same price.

Possibly, as long as we don't include the DEnon DM31. But in the seperates world, the closest I've come to a musical receiver at the budget end was a Marantz SR4300.

I've just checked the empiredirect website after going away for 2 days and the Denon AVR-1705 is in stock.

As it is i was just wondering if there was anything that compares for exactly the same price?

    Cheers

I'd strongly suggest you have a gander at eBay. Owing to the speed of change in home cinema kit I've seen some bargains come and go recently. I'd suggest you concentrate on quality 5.1 DD and DTS recievers, and ignore later DPL2 and 7.1 receivers, where the money has to be spread across too many amp sections. You could pick up a 2 year old Yammy, Pioneer, or even 'audiophile' brands such as Marantz or Arcam for a snip.

I spent a packet on a Pioneer VSX1011 THX 7.1 a year back (£700-£1,000) but I still get much better sound in stereo from my old NAD 3020B from 1985, which you can get on eBay for about £30-£60.
