Since people usually complain about some receivers' stereo reproduction, I'd like to ask this question:

Does the "poor stereo reproduction (on Yamaha RX-V357 for example)" refer to the CD analogue input only, or does that mean that the PCM signal put in thorugh coax or optical sounds poor in stereo mode as well?

    Thank you!

In the case of my current amp, the RXV630 - both is the case.

I just find a lack of midrange clarity - a little bass and tinnyness with nothing in between in either analogue or digital. Certainly a better CD player may sound slightly better but I've tried a standalone Cd player and DVD in digital mode and, to be honest, they:

    1) Sounded similar in digital mode and both sounded better via this method. Hence my conclusion from this is that both players have pretty similar transports
    2) The CD player sounded better via the phono / rca plugs as I'm assuming it had a betterchipset.

I dont know if this helps you but thought you may benefit from my experience.

You can however get good sounding AV amps out there for CD playback - they just generally tend to be at the higher end of the market. See my thread 'Good AV amp for music' just below.

Thanks. Obviously it is hard to get the best of both worlds at a more or less decent price. Maybe I'll think about the Jungson AV-899c Class A 6.1 amp (http://www.jungson.com/content/product_pages/av899c.htm). It sounded rock solid at the demonstration and here in Macedonia it can be had for 820 Euro or about 550 GBP.
