I'm planning on buying an AV receiver. This will be used
    mostly for music.

I had been looking at the Yamaha range, and was leaning towards
the rx-v640 or 740. With the new rx-v?50 range things got a bit
    confusing.

    So here it goes:

What do you think about the rx-v?50 range. Are any of it's
    members suitable for music ?
Should I look elsewhere (Marantz, Denon, HK, Cambridge Audio, etc..)?

Keep in mind that as I'm in Portugal the prices are quite different
from the UK, and I'll probably be buying the amp from Germany.

To further complicate matters, I'll probably be using Tannoy's
mx2-m for all the channels, except center, as these are affordable
around here. Also, I'll probably leave buying a subwoofer for later.

Unfortunately, auditioning is not an option.

    Thanks in advance,

I lisented to the Yam 640 and the Denon 1804 and thought that the Denon was better for playing music through. I bought the Denon and have been very happy with it.

    Balders.

Forget Yamaha for music!!! :lesson: :nono:

The most musical similar priced AV Receivers are:

    Marantz (SR440, SR5400...), Denon (1604, 1804...), Cambridge Audio (540R), Nad (742...)...

    Balders,

Noted, I'll start looking for the specs and prices of the
    Denon.

    Falp,

    I'll start looking for those.
I found a Cambridge Audio 540R for 528 EUR on Mediamarkt
Benfica a few weeks ago. I have read a few reviews saying
it runs hot, so I don't think it would be a good choice for
    the portuguese climate.

I'll take that offer for the web sites, thanks !

    Lowrider,

I'll try to remember that :D

    Thanks,

In that price range I would go for Japanese products, more sales, more features, more quality...

    Thanks for the info.

Regarding speakers, I'm thinking of buying either Tannoy MX-2m
or Eltax Monitor III for all the channels.

Do you think these would fit in with a Denon 1804/2803/2805 ?

    Thanks

They will drive any budget speakers well enough, it is more a matter of liking the way they sound toguether, and that is up to you, I personaly like the way Denon sounds with KEF speakers...

Corel (portuguese CA distributer) confirmed me the 528€ retail proce, so you get get 8~10% discount in an HiFi Shop...

Everyone ssem to love the 540R, but it has no esxtre featuras, just amazing sound and all basic surround systems DD, DTS, DPLII that you can need!

I haven't heard the 540R yet, but going on the rest of the Azure range from Cambridge Audio, it should be pretty good.

I would suggest listening to the Marantz SR7400, and the new NAD amps that have just been released, can't remember the model numbers (help!). If you want a musical receiver in that price range I wouldn't really look elsewhere other than NAD and Marantz. There will be those that will wave the Harmon Kardon flag, but I haven't heard one long enough to pass judgement. The new HK look is quite tasty though :)

    Kazman,

I would prefer a Marantz SR5400, but I can only find it on web
retailers that only accept payment by transfer.
As for the NADs, these are even more dificult to find online.

I found a web retailer that accepts COD payments and has Denons,
so I'm leaning towards the Denon avr-1804.

The retailer is http://www.tsn-cd.de , any comments on them ?

I'll probably use the amp with tannoy mx4-m fronts, mx2-m surrounds
and backs and an mxC-m center.

    Thanks
