    Hi.

I currently have crappy old TV plus xbox

Have RGB/S-video xbox cable, with optical out.

Tomorrow I'm getting my new 32" Samsung LCD. This has S-video, component plus obviously scart inputs.

Question: should I buy it a component cable?

My xbox will be running XBMC with various movies, dvds via dvd region-x.

    No games.

Will any of these sources deliver resolution above 480i, which I guess I can get from the s-video cable?

And therefore is there any point in getting the component cable?

Finally, are the component cables all the same - just a few bits of copper, with little to go wrong, or should I avoid the cheapo ones.

As far as I understand it the resolution you get will depend on the media you are playing so if the dvd/game supports 720i that is what you will get if it supports 1080i then you get 1080i.

I find that I get a better picture from the comp cable than s-video and generally you get little difference using mid range cables as opposed to high end cables, though I would not bother with really cheap cables as I find they wear out quicker as their production is cheaper.

    Hope this helps.

You need the component cable for HiDef & also to switch the video mode to NTSC. Then you can enable 480p, 720p & 1080i. XBMC does upscale so but DVD-X does not.

You should get the official Microsoft HiDef pack as it is very decent quality, has the component cables plus optical audio out & I have seen reports of the non-MS cables giving poor picture quality. http://www.divineo.co.uk/cgi-bin/div-uk/xb-of-hidef

I heartily approve the official Microsoft Advanced Scart. It made the picture amaziningly clearer on my LCD TV.

Just a bit resentful of the price they charge. £25 (or more).

    US Amazon ? $20.

    Rip-off the Britons.

    Nice one Microsoft.

Who charges £25 or more? I've never seen one for more than £19.99. Amazon's UK price is £17.99...

That's the 'advanced scart'... The one pointed to by nigellbb at divineo is the High definition AV pack.

Not quite the same I think?
