havent heard the other two but (assuming you mean cambridge 540R) is fantastic, it doesnt have all the features like the other two but it sounds fantastic in movies and for the price it is out of this world for music! you won't be disappointed, unless you want novelty settings which you will stop using in a week or two. it has all the essential settings and i use all the settings it has, i used to have a sony amp and most of the stuff i didnt even touch!

The Denon 3805 is in a different league compared to the other two, it is two price levels up for one thing, and is a superb amp.

Comparing it to the SR5500 and CA 540R is not really a fair contest, it will blow both of them away.

The 540R is a very good amp for the money, but not as good as the SR5500, it will take third place in this contest, but that is to be expected, the price differential between each amp is too large for this to be a fair comparison.

Therefore, to conclude, in order of performance:

    1: Denon 3805
    2: Marantz SR5500
    3: Cambridge Audio 540R

As Kaz says, the price brackets aren't comparable. Ched, I know you like the 540R but I'm not convinced it would outperform the other 2 models that have been mentioned.

Cklo, roughly how much do you want to spend and what speakers are you hoping to use it with? :)

have you heard the azur kazman? i wondered about the 3805, i though it was higher up but wasnt sure, but i have to say the azur surpassed everything else i tested, especially in stereo. I hooked it up to my dad's keilidhs and it was out of this world, and had no trouble powering them. Having said that i remember i didnt hear the marantz, it was the one down from that. i just wish the people who looked into the azur compared it with things in its price range, cos i love it so much! i've seen it compared to your marantz in the past kazman!

The Azur is a fine amp, I was not knocking it in anyway, I just felt the initial comparison to be unfair to it.

It is probably just as good if not better than a Marantz SR4500, Denon 1905 and Pioneer 814, but taking on the bog boys in the SR5500 and Denon 3805 classes is just an unfair comparison.

I will, don't worry. My best mate has a Marantz 4400 and I have a Marantz 7400 so hopefully we should be able to gauge it's performance between those 2 models. FYI the 3805 has a RRP of £1000. What did you test against the 540R? :)

the denon is a movie machine and will wipe the floor of the other two. In stereo it will be a different story.

    :rotfl: oh ok.
tested against yam 550 and 650 (liked 650 but couldnt afford it), i think the marantz 4400, sony 697 (actually owned that for a while before testing rest - mistake!) and the denon 1905. I probably watch more movies, but i knew any amp would be a massive step up for me in 5.1 mode, so was judging a lot by musical quality, as i have had better stereo stuff in the past, and am trying to catch up with dad one day!!! Soon will be adding a nytech power amp to front channels.

    edit - bedtime now - tv at 7am (another 28zd26p :) )

    Guys!!!
thx all for your useful comments.....
Yes....i should not compare those amp with some price of range!
my budget.....I should say that I can afford to buy up to the Marantz SR5500,
so....which you guys suggest me to buy?
    1) Marantz SR5500

    2) save some little money and get the Cambridge 540R

    3) Denon 1905 (as I heard some guys said it was good amp)

    4) PioneerVSX-D814 ( I saw the review said it was better than the Cambridge 540r)

    5) Yamaha V650

I would like to use the amp on
60% for movies and 40% for pop songs.
and my listening area only within 100 sq feet.
Once again, THX a lot for you guys help!!!

i personally would like you to get the cambridge, its fantastic value for money, but i think you'd be best off with the yamaha 650, and although i havent heard the marantz im sure you wouldnt be unhappy with it. The denon isnt great for music imo, and with the weight you put on music... :)

It's worth considering the Marantz SR7400 which you can still pick up for £400 (as long as you don't mind it in black) from www.petertyson.co.uk.

Try searching the forums for SR7400.

I bought one after it was recommended on this site as the best choice for music playback, especially for 400 quid. Its performance with CDs is stunning.

I certainly have no complaints about its performance with films, although other amps are often rated higher for those with a separate music system.

The sound quality of the 7400 is hard to match at it's RRP of £700, let alone the bargain price of £400. :)

IMHO I'd only buy a Denon or Harman Kardon. I don't have much time for Marantz or Yamaha products, and especially not their amps.

There's a no bull**** review and comparison of the Marantz here:
    http://www.graskinhometheatre.bigstep.com/generic93.html

I'm sure some geniunely prefer Marantz or Yamaha, but not me and not a lot of other people I know - so just giving my vote to the other side...

Just to counter that review, here is one from Home Cinema Choice saying almost the exact opposite: http://www.homecinemachoice.com/cgi-bin/displayreview.php?reviewid=4463

I still do not understand how people can think the Marantz sound is shrill though, in my opinion it is far from it, anyway, if everybody liked the same thing, life would be boring :D

Even with my fairly bright Mission speakers I really don't find the SR7400 to be shrill.

Have you heard these models yourself superpixel?
