A few years ago I used a fertilizer in the autumn which also killed leatherjackets. I'm sure it was called Autumn Toplawn but can't seem to find it for sale anywhere. Even t'internet looks bare with this. Have they stopped producing this stuff for lawns?

Many of the chemicals have under gone a removal from the domestic and professional market but there are still professional chemicals available but not for domestic use.
If it was warmer you could have used nematodes.

are you suffering from damage from these and from other animals?

    There is this
    http://www.bayergarden.co.uk/en/data/Products/p/Provado-Lawn-Grub-Killer-20sqm.aspx

I'm afraid though its a little late now to treat them as the grubs tend to head down deeper which means the chemical has less chance of working.

I did apply some of the Bayer stuff at the start of September, I was looking to just round it off with a belt and braces application of Autumn Toplawn! Perhaps I should wait to spring now.

Yes spring time would be when these little devils start to feed on your turf. I take it these do a fair bit of damage and birds tend to hack away at your lawn.

More the birds issue, although the casts are unsightly as well. That and lots of daddy long legs flirting about the house!

    Have a peep here.

This shows commercial and domestic and you will notice the different date periods of application for various products.
The commercial stuff requires the user to be trained and certified and no doubt will be more effective.
