Some top notch entries this month, eventually managed to narrow it down to a choice of two entries.

In the end it was Tobers who got my vote, but it was a really tough choice between that one and the entry from Kraiklyn.

Special mention to:

Bodoman – For his comedy value again.
Zargone – Really like the way the colour stands out, and good DOF.
Kraiklhn – Totally bizarre, unfortunately not the best photo because it was taken underwater, however a very good effort given the conditions.
C4PRE – Good idea and PP’ing, however not quite as good as your one in the not valid thread last month.

But in the end it has to be Tobers. Yes it’s staged, but surly that’s part of the fun of the competition, trying to think up ideas to fit the theme, as well as taking a good photo. In fact if you look at recent winners I would say that Opposites, Soft, Over the Edge and Work could all be classed as “Staged”. If you had to just take a photo that fitted the theme as you wondered around with your camera then we would probably only get half the entries we do now and not as good.

Ian.

Dear Zone,and Stevegreen.
Can someone please just clarify something for me....

I am faily new to this Forum, and maybe I have miss read the rules, or unware of what can and can't be entered

Hi Jay

As long as the images you wish to merge/post process whatever, comply with the rules, ie, you took the picture and the pictures were all taken within the time frame dictated for any particular month then you're free to do whatever you wish.

Its purely a personal thing, some don't mind a lot of image manipulation where as others like the picture to be more pure if there is such a thing, hence we let the voters dictate the result :)

Not sure whether to post mid-vote and all, but it's a really interesting debate on the "staged" versus "found" topic. At the end of the day, the beauty of this comp is that we each vote for what we personally think is the best photo. If you dont like a staged shot, dont vote for it. If you do like it, vote for it. That's what makes this comp so special.

Personally, I think it would be pushing the bounds of simplicity to have photos that you can only take if you happened to pass by and found the situation there. How would anyone know? But I do appreciate the value of the captured moment and there's a load of great entries of that type in this month. For my shot, a lot of thought followed by 3 nights doing recces of various multi storey car parks in Surrey, a few sketches & prep then a couple of hours "on location" in rather curious circumstances didn't feel enormously easy, but I really enjoyed it nontheless. I had a blast in fact.

As for photoshopping, I think the rule is that you have to declare what post-processing you do, and as Zone said, as long as the entire composition including any composites are taken in the duration of the comp then that's OK.

I'm well chuffed so far by the way - thanks for all the votes! Not tempting fate by thinking of any themes yet...

Tobers

Tough one this month. It's between Tobers and C4PRE for me.

C4PRE very original idea and good pp but I think Tobers slighty edges it. Great idea, love the arrow leading into the ironing board which you planned ;) and the lighting for that situation is great. If you do win I hope your daughter is going to get a few quid to go shopping :rotfl:

Also liked....

Gizmo's dyson on the beach, I bet you're still cleaning the sand out!

Well done all

Tricky old business voting here isn't it?
Firstly honourable mentions to Gordon, Gizmo & CAP4RE who all produced great (but so different) images.
My final three though were:
1. iandrews - simple yet very much out of place in my view.
2. Pinocchio61 - lovely image! But perhaps more out of 'out of this era' than out of place.
3. .....and Tobers (who gets my vote this month). Extreme ironing with the creases in all the right places ;).

I don't like terms like 'contrived' in this context. My own image was just a lucky(ish) find (& I'm well chuffed to get my first ever vote by the way ) - but how would those who spotted rather than fashioned their shots feel if they were dismissed as being 'stumbled upon' (for example)? Great that we all get to vote according to our own rationale / values but I don't like to see emotive labels attached. Sorry - rant over.
[This isn't targetted at anyone in particular BTW - I hope it simply makes a valid point rather than causing offence]

I saw this before you edited it, and felt that it was targeted squarely at me. No problem with that - if I think something I'll say it.

The reason I couldn't vote for a contrived image was simple. The theme was 'Out of Place'; pretty straightforward I'd say. So 'placing' something to look 'Out of Place' wasn't in the spirit of the theme (IMHO) - maybe i'm taking it to literally - who knows?

The beauty of this comp is of course the way the voting works, we don't have a panel of experts - we have each other. We're all very different, we all create different kinds of photographs. There is always going to be differences of opinions about the interpetation of a theme, it happens every month - it's part of the fun.

I'm not trying to take anythign away from those entries that have been engineered to look out of place - there are some very fine ones, the current leader included.

I'm still trying to work out what an 'emotive label' is.

Hi All

Just come in and been reading the chain of threads below regarding Photoshop editing.

I tend to agree with Zone, as long as the photo has been taken by the person entering the competition and the photo editing has also be carried out by that same person then there should be no problems entering that image.

Lets all rememeber post photo editing itself is an 'Art' and can only be carried forward by photographer who are skillful enought to know what works with their image....

Looking forward to the end results.....going to be a close one....

BTW thanks for my votes.......oppssss not got any this time :(

It's a shame to me that the winners of the competitions tend (i.e not always) to be very professional looking, perfect pictures. What I mean by that is most of the time it seems to be the skill of the photographer that wins through, rather than the take on the theme.
I'm not trying to be negetive, but everyone is giving their 2p!
Some people are great photographers, but think a PC is the devil (my Dad for example). He could probablt manage to get an entry on here...but PS would be waaaaaay beyond him. And because of that I think he'd stand no chance of winning. Or me as I'm rubbish with photoshop! :rotfl: My selective colouring for this months entry took me 3 hours!!!

Ian.

Kraiklyn, I think that you have taken an excellent, natural photo and yes the conditions were not ideal but I think it adds to the atmosphere of the photo rather than detracts!
I personally love the effort that you have gone to in order to achieve this picture as a diver myself I know how difficult it is getting to decent sites, kitting up, and maintaining bouyancy whilst taking pictures.

Well done, a fab photo!!

Big Moisty,

My entry that won last August had no "pp" done it except turning it in to a jpeg. It was pretty much an in camera shot. Just quite a good one that was on topic. I don't think that you need to be a master of digital manipulation to create beautiful images or ones that may win this forums small photo competition.

Liquid, thanks for explaining your rationale on this months competition. I can now see how that makes sense.

For me though, as I said earlier, it has to be "on topic" for me and it must be a good photograph. So I had to go for Tobers. It was set up but I still liked it as a surreal piece that was in line with the competition title.

Gordon

I see your point and it's very valid. If we were to only vote though for pics that weren't contrived we'd be left with very few this month. Maybe I'd get a vote :rotfl: On the other hand though photography is all about being creative and is it such a bad thing if someone places an object in the pic to produce a stunning image?

It's a shame to me that the winners of the competitions tend (i.e not always) to be very professional looking, perfect pictures. What I mean by that is most of the time it seems to be the skill of the photographer that wins through, rather than the take on the theme.

I sometimes find it hard to choose. Do I vote for a stunning picture which is on theme but not much imagination has gone into it or do I vote for a picture that maybe isn't as good photography wise but the take on the theme is spot on and very imagineative and original

Well didn’t get much chance this month on my, just too much on at the moment.:(

Some great ideas for photos, some I would never even think of in a million years, so my top 4 are :

Kraiklyn, the most oddest thing you will see underwater I think.

c4pre, Great idea and I can’t see the join!

Gizom 76, Love the colours, very out of place, good landscape picture to boot.

Tobers, Great idea. The wide picture makes it all the more dramatic along with the arrow.

Would have vote for all 4 of you but had to go for Gizom 76 in the end!

Well done to all.

Paul

Difficult to chose an out of place one here, but Zargone`s poppys, especially this time of year, certainly followed the theme for me.

Allan

HELP!!!

I have 4 firm favourites and am finding it diffcult to decide ... can I vote for all 4 :lease:

Gordon : love the effective execution of the chiaroscuro technique - have been hooked on this since childhood

Iandrews : again, clever idea, love the sharpnes and clarity of detail in the image

Geordie Jester : love the composition, the vibrant colours and the way you are drawn to the orange leaves

C4pre : great idea - not something I would have thought of, and definately not likely to see ...

Decisions, decisions....

My vote goes to ... eeney, meeney, miney mo ... :D
Nope - no good - who wants to pull a name out of the bag for me ...:rotfl:?

I've voted for bubble502 'coz it made me laugh. we don't have bike stands like that around here so to me is defo out of place.:smashin:

Great shots from tobers and c4pre aswell.

well done to everyone who entered:), yet again this month I found myself with very very little time. next month I promise.

kraiklyn for me.

Of the others, Gordon's stood out. Fantastically evocative shot, and very on theme. But Kraiklyn's made me smile and has stood out for me since it was posted a while back.

As others have said - some great entries this month - well done all - give yourselves a proper pat on the back :smashin:

Ones that I think deserve special mention are:

Gizmo76- excellent composition and colours - great picture
Gordon - really like the mood of this one
Zargone - simple, on theme and very effective.
Gordie Jester - nature at its best. Well captured
Tobers - great idea - excellent lighting and clever use of colours.

Difficult decision but my vote this month goes to........................C4PRE

Don't really care how it was concieved (PP or not) The end result is well on theme and made me laugh and thats all that matters. Well done

Ok - i didn't pull the name out of bag but here's how/why I voted:

1) - The photos I was drawn to the most ... Gordon, Iandrews, Geordie Jester, C4pre
2) - The ones the fitted the most (in my humble newbie opinion) ... Iandrews, C4pre

that narrowed my choice down to 2 ... but now what??? Then the light bulb got switched on and i saw the obvious answer:

3) - The name of the forum ... 'Digital Cameras, Photography & Photo Editing' which gave me a clear choice ... C4PRE

The photo captures the theme AND the nature of the forum...

(ps - sorry for late vote - I got filtered!)

Ok - i didn't pull the name out of bag but here's how/why I voted:

Did your vote have anything to so with the fact that you're posting from his computer ?

thats a very threatening tone IanJ

...even if it is a mate voting for a mate........... mates could easily phone mates and vote for each other on different computers !

ddodia entered this comp and has the right to vote for anyone he likes !!!

Having checked both their flickr sites I'm fairly happy that ddodia and C4PRE are not one and the same person so the vote stands as far as I'm concerned.

I'd already noticed that they were mates but didn't think there was anything suspicious. I also note that there are plenty of families who post on this forum and in the competition and that there are a few of us who have become friends or who know each other who post regularily. I don't think that there is strategic voting going on, or ever has been.
