    Hello all,
I recently got an F serial 8000S from eBay, but only yesterday powered it up to check the functionality out of curiosity/boredom (haven't bought the speakers yet). Anyway.... is the volume motor on all these Amps audible, or do I have a faulty unit?

I have vaguely heard of a fault on some of these models - 'crackling' volume change, but this does not seem to be the same, as I said I didn't have any speakers connected.

So, is this normal? My only limited experience prior to this has been with AV Amps, and all their volume motors were totally silent.

Many thanks in advance for any info.

From memory, I believe my 8000S was audible. It wasn't really loud, but you could here it if you were fairly close, and the room was quiet.

yes it's audible, quite a few other amp makers have used these motorised volume pots and they're all audible to different extents depending on how open the case is.

Yep, I had one 8000S for 8 about years and I can definitely confirm its volume pot motor was indeed audible.

I never found it disturbing, rather somewhat amusing, like the noise one would expect from a 1950's robot movie :D .
