    Hiya,
I have a samsung smart tv with the only audio out function is a digital optical audio socket. I want to play the audio through a Sony hifi and the only audio in function is a 3.5mm stereo jack socket. Is there a cable that can support that or do i need to buy something else? thanks

Yes you can get a 3.5mm to RCA cable amazon sell these very cheap, or alternatively you could get a cheap dac which you would connect an RCA cable to from your hifi to the dac then an optical cable from the dac to the tv.

    Hope this helps.

Or you link the hifi to the TV's phones output
    with a 3.5mm stereo jack-jack cable ...

Could you tell us specifically what Sony HiFi you have? It seems very unusually that the HiFi would have a 3.5mm Stereo Input.

To make this work, you will likely need a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter). Depending on how much you want to spend, the prices can vary greatly -

    On the low end -

Superfi - CYP AUD1 DIGITAL TO ANALOGUE CONVERTER

Superfi - CYP AUD3 DIGITAL TO ANALOGUE CONVERTER

And prices go up from there. One of the above is combined Optical and USB, the other is combined Optical and Coaxial. Either one will work.

Curious does your TV has a HEADPHONE output, because that could be used to drive you Stereo directly; no need for a DAC?
