I have an Audi A3 1.8 SE, 2001 facelift model. The centre console consists of an OEM Chorus Radio/Cassette/CD Changer-controller, an AC unit and a gubbins box.

On my neighbour's Golf, they have replaced the gubbins box with a VW in-dash CD changer. My local Audi dealer tells me that on the A3, there are no parts shown on their system to suggest that the gubbins box is removable and replaceable by Audi's own in glovebox CD changer, which is identical to the VW in-dash unit, or even an after market unit. They, of course, want to sell me their own incredibly expensive, in-boot changer and an even more overpriced connecting cable.

Is anyone able to advise me about this or direct me to a specialist who may be able to advise me on this subject?

    Thanks

The latest i.e. not ours style A3 is able to use the CANBUS system and can use the 6 CD indash changer which is normally located in the glovebox. It might be possible to use this with the concert 2 stereo (single DIN CD player) in the older A3s but would have to be a custom install. My friend has offered me one from his A4, but I am a little wary.

Failing that Audi do a symphony system which is a double DIN system, with single/6CD changer in dash (depending on whether it's v1 or v2) and radio cassette player (why?!!), but that would involve changing the cage in which the stereo sits, the aircon unit (moves it down).

I have the above setup (which I bought on ebay) but can't now be bothered to install, so it you might see it there again...

    Hope this helps,
    Shye
