Attenuators or gain control (my amp is too loud)

I have a problem with my amp, when i turn the volume up just a little it gets a lot louder, this is a pain as I cannot get fine volume control with the remote.

I have seen adverts for inline attenuators and also amps with gain control (which mine does not have)

What is the best solution for managing this?
Will attenuators degrade the sound quality at all?
I am thinking of adding a preamp to manage this in future but that is probably 12months of saving away so what could I use in the interim?

cheers

Rothwell In-line attenuators are good but expensive (£40) but you could have a crack at making your own - a few hifi DIY sites have instructions on how.
