My eldest son sold his PS4, it was only 6 months old although it wasn't getting used.

I helped him this weekend perform a proper format, I also made a note of all the devices serial numbers (console and 2 controllers) We listed it locally and found a buyer almost immediately, guy came round was happy and paid cash.

I was out last night when I got a call from my son telling me that the guy had just returned saying it doesn't work properly and that he wanted his money back.

I asked him to inspect the device carefully and to find the serial number, I asked him to make a note of it and message me the information. He messaged me 5 mins later with a different number to which we sold! I told him to pass the phone to the guy and I told him that he shouldn't have just turned up without warning and that I have the money and he can bring it back tonight so I can deal with it to which he agreed.

Now, beating the fudge out of the guy is not going to help although I'm not happy at all. Should I just make him aware that I'm onto him and that he should walk away or should I report him? He will no doubt try this on with someone else as he has a broken console he wants to exchange, that person may not be so lucky.

    What to do?

...if this happened to me, I would wait until he comes back tonight (chances are, he may not turn up), and then tell him that the console he is trying to return is not the same one you sold to him and show him your proof and see what he has to say about that.

Don't accuse him of anything as it could turn nasty - just state that he's brought you back a different console....

Yeah I agree, see what he has to say and then drop the bombshell.
You could then report him and let police know its just for recording only (if you have all his details).
That way if someone else reports him at least there is a record of his previous 'doing'.

Where was it listed? If Facebook market place you could even make others aware.

Yes, was Facebook market place, I've already taken off as many details as I can from his personal page.

Think I'll keep it calm and see how he reacts, bottom line is, he won't be getting his money back so if he gets agitated I'll suggest he calls the Police and I'll be happy to provide evidence.

Well then I am sure you can bring him to the attention of other market place users, so hopefully they will be aware and not trade/buy from him. Just make sure you are correct.

You're a paitent and well reasoned bloke. I would have lost my rag at that. I would be blunt and say you're on to him and if he turns up at your house again it won't end well and you'll be reporting him to the police (even if you don't).

...the thing is - you can't get angry with him if he turns up again at your house as accusing him of something, will just aggravate him. The last thing you want is a scuffle on your doorstep with a complete stranger.....

It could be a genuine mistake - perhaps he bought 2 consoles, one from you and one from someone else, and returned the wrong one to you (far fetched I know but still a possibility!) hence why I would suggest doing what I posted previously...

I don't think you have anything to gain by confronting him in person on your doorstep. For all you know he might have a violent side, particularly if he thinks you have "his" cash on you. Contact him and tell him you will only accept returns on the console you sold him and that he brought the wrong one over yesterday.

I bet he won't show up. He knows that he has been found out and will not return.

I assume the guy saw your son checking the serial numbers, if so I doubt he will come back. If he does just tell him you recorded the serial numbers and as long as they match, and you can check it isn't working, he can have his money back.

I'm not sure I'd go that far, as he may break it in order to "legitimately" get his money back so he can scam someone else. Far better if he gets stuck with paying for a working one. i.e. if he does bring the correct one back hopefully it will be working and Naak can refuse the refund.

Edit: misread your post  I agree.

@Naaktgeboren, I'm not certain if it applies to the PS4 or not, but I remember that Xbox 360 serial number labels could be heated with a hairdryer and removed quite easily, as they were quite thick. If there is a similar way to move PS4 labels, it might be worth just being wary of that as another angle to this scam?
If he does come back, could you do a full system check, including checking what the console says it's serial number is in the relevant section of the settings?

Edit: it's been alluded to, but not directly stated; this guy knows where you and your family live now, please be careful in what happens next - if you feel the need to get the police involved, do so earlier, rather than later.

When you say you made a note of them, did you simply write them down? Or did you take photos of the serial numbers, preferably with something in the pictures that identifies you as the owner?

If you only wrote down the serial numbers the buyer could legitimately suggest that your serial numbers aren't real and the faulty console he's returning is indeed the one you sold him.

Obviously he's trying it on... or so it seems. However, I'm just thinking that if you only wrote down the serial numbers then you might be in trouble?

It depends how ballsy the scammer is. Is he really going to report/ call the Police on Naak when he knows Naak is in the right?

I have photo's plus if he want's a row, we can connect it up and get the serial number from the console. If he is still adamant, I'll simply tell him to phone the police, knowing that he's ripping me off, I really don't think he'd chance that!

A quick look on the doorstep, check the serial number and show him the photo of the one you sold him. "Sorry Pal, nice try, but that's not the one we sold you, Bye!"

Move any cars off the drive so he doesn't feel the need to key one on his way past...

Not too bothered about that, we have excellent CCTV coverage, more I think about it, I don't think he's going to show. Think he was hoping for a no questions asked refund plus a shiny new console free! As was mentioned, he saw my son checking the serial and messaging me the info, just spoke to my eldest and asked him once again exactly what was said. He told me that the guy asked him what he was doing and son replied (checking the serial numbers).

This is probably already considered risky for him, might not be worthwhile him pursuing, we shall see :D

At the end of the day it's irrelevant, if the serial number doesn't match my records, he's getting nothing except pointed in the direction of the front door. :)

As you say, I don't think he'll show up, but just in case he has swapped your stickers onto the broken one I'd imagine you would spot it on a close inspection.

The police don't have the resources to deal with a matter like this, sure, I'll log it if he turns into a complete cockwomble but I'm not being left with a broken console which isn't mine plus my wallet being £270 lighter because some scumbag is trying it on.

Was just in jest. I'm still concerned that, knowing you're on to him, you need to be extra vigilant when checking the serial number that's it's not your sticker on his box.

Should have also taken a photo of the serial number of the hard drive.
Even if someone did fiddle with the serial number sticker on the console, they might not have remembered to swap the hard drive over as well :)
